I think you forgot to upload the picture that was in the other thread you self-deleted (I've attached it for you here).

This is a common error, it just means that there were some system files that could not be moved during the defrag process. Nothing to worry about.

I'm hoping that in a year or two's time, defragmentation won't be an issue anymore if solid state drives become the norm.

      ok.. thanks....

wondering what these files are that can't be moved..

I defragged 2 weeks ago and this was not the case..

defrags "view report" says they are in documents and settings/tony/local settings . 4.02 gigabytes..

in local settings I have a temp folder which if I right click on properties, it says 4.02 gigs, but in fact, if I open that temp folder up, there are 21 log files that are only kb's... prob not 1 megabyte total....
      something is goofy there...

Do you have UPS? If not did you have a power out or system lock up?

First thing I would do is error checking on drive C: and check the box "automatically fix file system errors" It will tell you it has to reboot. After it reboots and runs, do a global search for *.chk files. The only other thing that comes to mind would be if you did an image backup and excluded a bunch of files, then did an image restore. You can get "fake file entries" where the files aren't really there.

did have a lockup about a week ago...

          what is UPS?

          did the check disk..
it did fix some errors but I still show 4.2 gigabytes in the local settings/temp folder a[ if I right click the temp folder and click properties]. and pretty much nothing is in that folder..except some HPmon log files..

            Update...

I ran CCLEANER, had it scan temp files,
and it found a pcimage.bin file that was 4.2 gigabytes.
not sure where that came from but think that was the culprit..

UPS is Uninterruptible Power Supply or battery backup. NTFS is a journaling file system so it's pretty rugged unless the power goes out suddenly. If you have write caching enabled on your HD then you should have it battery backed up. Otherwise when the power cuts off suddenly the file system gets messed around. If your system locks up, then sometimes all the stuff doesn't get written to the HD. Before NTFS when that happened a lot of times you had to do a repair install. Now usually file system check fixes it. You just lose some files instead of the file system.

If that big file was in temp files then maybe the program that made it crashed before it got around to deleting it? Probably something like that.
