K-Lite Codec Pack is a collection of codecs and related tools. Codecs are required to encode and/or decode (play) audio and video. The K-Lite Codec Pack is designed as a user-friendly solution for playing all your movie files. With the K-Lite Codec Pack you should be able to play 99% of all video file exstentions.
below is the free download site..

Download K-Lite Codec Pack 18.6.7 FULL, STANDARD and BASIC : K-Lite Codec Pack is a comprehensive selection of codecs

      I recommend ffdshow myself.

But also, the problem is Windows Media Player

You should get Media Player Classic, it plays more formats than WMP and isn't quite as annoying.

Okay. I'll chime it too. I have always used the K-lite codec pack and it has done well for me.

It also includes what DRF was saying above plus more.

It has worked well in XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

More than like your problem with WMP will be fixed as well because it sounds like it's missing a codec that XP does not have pre-installed.

          Good Luck
