i'm not convinced that it really is faster

it loads some of its services delayed and so it seems like it is ready for use faster but this is rather "cheating" than faster loading

but dont get me wrong: i'm pleased with the speed so far

Are you going to try the update preserving all apps or are you going to do clean install? I saw some blogs claiming there's a registry hack that lets you do an install to a clean partition without using the Vista "double install" trick.
Registry hack? You don't need a registry hack, just use the disc and select "Custom (Advanced)"

I confirmed this too, I took the Home Premium upgrade disc I got from my laptop and put it in VMWare, with a completely empty virtual machine with *no* OS on it, it installed just fine. That "Upgrade only" thing is just a gimmick...

No I am not doing a clean install because I want to keep the recovery partition.
See, the recovery partition will have Vista, not Windows 7... what good will that do you?
What I'd suggest is just wipe the drive, including the recovery partition, do a clean install, and once you get all the programs installed that you want, use Windows Backup to make yourself either backup discs or a backup image of your hard drive.
You could then restore from that if needed.

That's exactly what HP does - only they include all their crapware as well!

no what he wants is to save the vista recovery partition so he may go back to vista . though i dont know how ur gonna do that cause by installing 7 u may loose the option to even run recovery from bios.

ur best bet is to either make dvd's or use acronis and make a image including ur recovery disk, it will be larg backup but ull get ur harddisk at factory condition when ever u want ...

that registry hack is for ppl who dont know how to boot / install from dvd / bios.

when u put dvd from windows u cant clean install only upgrade with upgrade disk.

edit: can open backup partition but not the backup file.

The recovery partition I have set it up differently, it has the programs that was included when I first set up the LT. I did make the recovery disks and have them put away in a safe place. That will bring the LT back to the factory condition. So I am not worried about that. I also have the orginal drive that was in the LT since I have 2 500 gig hard drives installed. I have not tried the recovery partition. I guess It really doesnot matter. But I do need to do the windows 7 tweaks. I am thinking of getting another drive just to image the current drive that has the windows 7 OS. That way I can use either vista or windows 7. I could also make it a dual boot system.

If you read the blog it's not the install, but the activation that's prevented.

What? Didn't I just say I put the disc in with a completely empty hard drive and it worked?
But why would anyone clean install an OS when running Windows? That's the stupidest logic I ever heard - usually I'm frantically backing up my files, not putting the disc in with it still running.

last HP i had uses its propritory software to restore. and i could'nt able to open the backup only partition later, and bios shortcut would not work either

Can you ever open an *image*?

True, they use proprietary software to restore the backup. But regardless, it's still an ordinary disk image... they just use the HP software to restore the image. And if it helps - there's an HP tool that lets you burn a set of recovery discs that copies every file on that recovery partition so it's safe to delete it and still be able to recover.

If you read the blog it's not the install, but the activation that's prevented.
Um, OK, I can't comment on that as I didn't want to activate my upgrade disc - I merely tested it in a virtual machine. Though that seems sketchy to me... the upgrade disc actually SAYS ON THE BOX that if you're using Windows XP you need to do a clean install - why would they prevent you from doing a clean install?
I'm sure if it fails you can just call the Microsoft number and complain to tech support a bit, and they'll activate it

na na u didnt get it.. yes u can use upgrade disk when u boot from it, many ppl dont know how to install, and when u say upgrade that usually means put dvd in and it will prompt u to upgrade, but upgrade disks wont give u option to clean / custom install, they just give u upgrade option. full install dvd's give u both option.

But what I'm saying is that usually people who want to do a clean install don't just pop the disc in with Windows running! I think it's been pretty well known, ever since Windows started using CDs (95?) that to install it you have to boot from the CD. Only with XP and later did they do the whole in-place upgrade and installing within the OS thing.

whats that suppose to mean, yes u can open image from software that makes it in first place, u can even browse the files folders inside the image.. if thats what u meant.? im not familiar with any tool that can open harddisk /partition image from HP..he was talking about saving harddisk partition backup though he will be installing windows 7.
I don't know how HP keeps their image - but I'm inclined to think it's more in the form of an installer... like where it installs Windows as well as their proprietary software.
To back up the backup partition, as I said, there's an HP tool that comes on 99.9% of HP computers. (And for those who don't have it - well, I don't think it's hard to find the EXE online somewhere)

don't even think about running vista/se7en on machines with less then 2-3gb of ram - even 2gb is rather critical!

true for vista , though they made real effort with SP2, but still one need 2 gb for normal usage in vista sp2.
with seven, well 1 gb and basic usage and fairly faster PC no problems. 7 got good memory management, same system with 1 gb it uses round 400 - 450 mb, same system 2 gb it uses 700 - 800 mb.
7 runs pretty well on atom i tried it with 512 mb ddr II. with aero little slugish
