Is there a program to preview a folder of avi files..like thumbnails

hmm, what exactly do you want to see?

please keep in mind that a folder with say dozens or even hundreds of video files sould almost crash your system if you wanted ALL of them to be played in thumbnail-sized preview windows so i doubt ANY tool will make them play simultaniously

I want to preview maybe 10-15 files at a time so I can see if there are misnamed duplicates

I found the program I need.
It's called SceneGrabber.NET and it's freeware.
