You're right. It is too slow, though way faster than USB 2.0. I mean I transfered 266 GBs of over 4GB .iso video files from the e-sata dock and a Seagate 500GB HDD to the SIIG 3.0 dock and a 1TB WD Eco-Green HDD.

The Seagate says upto 3Gbs transfer speed. The Wd is also 3Gbs transfer speed. Both have 16 MB caches. Something's not right. My mobos e-sata port is 3Gbs. The Thermal E-sata Dock supports up to #GBs and we both know what the USB 3.0 can do. I copied and then pasted the files from the Seagate to the WD HDD. Seagate in Thermal dock and WD in SIIG 3.0 Dock. Wonder why it stalled at exactly 21.7 MBs all the way through.

I did change my mobos storage settings to AHCI. Let me get back to you. If you have some tip let me know. Thnx.

Yup it's the drives and which one is where. Right now I'm getting about 70 MBs more or less from the 3.0 dock and the WD 1TB Eco-Green to the Caviar Black WD 1tb 64 Mb cache 6GB transfer. Well a lesson learned. I'll be using better drives for storing and occasional video work and just buy a simple one for plain storage, unless the price difference is minimal. I'm also getting another USB 3.0 Dock just to see how 1 to 1 goes on those. The Thermal BlacX is the cheapest at $49.99 so that's the ticket.

You know others will come out soon especially Thermaltake, so I would be a lil more patient before pulling the trigger. Also you had a Sharkoon already and the build quality wasn't that great correct? Even though it says here that the build is premium grade, so maybe they wised up. This is almost $90.00. I wonder if you can transfer from 1 HDD to another in the same dock w/out any performance issues etc...?

A 2 hole dock is actually the way to go to save space etc...

Update on my speed issue. It seems that the more files I transfer and the more filled the destination drive is, the slower the speed rate gets. I transferred 396 GBs of .isos as a drag and drop folder to the same drive as posted previously and the speed went to about 40+ MBs all the way through. That's a 30 MB drop from when the drive was empty. It had the 221 GBs in already. There's no other way of knowing what speed I can achieve w/out another 3.0 Dock and a very good drive.

Afaik the 2 holers require a USB cable for each drive. It's mainly a space saver thing. Although esp. in docks without fans I'd be a bit paranoid about the heat dissipation. I wish there was some brick & mortar store where I could try some of these things out. I'd like to try some of those cheapie USB 3.0 docks and see how cheesie or good they are. They seem to be popping up for around $30 or so these days.

I'm pretty much at a plateau for buying these things. If anything I might get another HD at some point. But what I have now isn't full yet.

It would be ok even in the 2 holers. Thermal still sells theirs so they must be fine w/everything. The only brick & mortar I could think of is Microcenter which there's one here now though a lil ways by Metro-North Railway. The Startech and that white one you posted had decent reviews as a Bytecc also. I'll need to get another to see what's up w/the speed thingy. I'll shop around see what I decide then pull the trigger wic.

I'm seriously looking at getting this. Seems like they're in the door already and making strides. Can't beat it. Color's not great.

Looking for a fast way to access data from your SATA II drive and have a USB 3.0 port unused? ineo Tech has a solution.

That ineo looks interesting. They are even selling them at Walmart online. If you get one let me know how you like it.

Miles I pulled the trigger at EGG for the INEO. I'll let you know how it fairs asaic. For $32 + including shipping you can't beat it, and several reviews has it as a solid item already. Directron has it the cheapest, though I never dealt w/them.

I'm going to have to keep an eye on the Walmart stuff because some of their online items have very cheap shipping.. like $.97. It varies by item. On this one I think the shipping was $1.97 or something like that.

I've been needing another UPS for awhile. Egg just had a deal with free shipping for a 450 model(4 surge 4 with backup and surge) for < $40 so I got that. You have to watch Best Buy because they had a similar deal but it was for the old phased out version. This deal is for the new update of that model. Best Buy will give $5 off to unload obsolete hw. You have to watch the model numbers.

Miles is that like a surge protector w/4 outlets? I never bothered going to much into what a UPS is. I've only heard about them when I started computers and building. If it's suppose to protect you in case of a power failure where does it get it's power from, a battery pack or something? Is it really needed?

Yes the UPS has an internal battery usually with enough power to get your computer shut down with out trashing the OS. But the UPS can also keep the voltage at a consistent level in the case of brownouts. The brownouts that I get here the voltage would go down to around 90 Vac. So if you do get brownouts get a UPS that has the AVR function also. AVR=automatic voltage regulation.

If you have rough power you may want to get the conditioning type. But they are expensive. Here the main problem is 1 or 2 second power outs. As the doctor said, if the power stays out I can shutdown gracefully.

I have a small one for my external drives and network gear. It holds the connections during a few second power glitch. Eliminates a lot of frustration. I have a 550 for my towers and monitor. It's worth the investment.

Miles I'm impressed w/the INEO. I just finished some trial runs and it all depends on the HDDs and also how full they are. From a 16 MB to a 64 MB WD it was slow as last time, hovering around 27-28 MBs per second per explorer. Now from the 64 MB cache to the 16 MB it burst out at 150 or more than settled around high 60's almost 70 MBs. So I'm thinking another 64 MB cache Black Caviar 3 or 6GB would greatly see higher speed rates.

Now as far as the INEO, it's a very solidly constructed dock that's also very compact so it's a high thumbs up for me. Also no additional power pack like w/the SIIG. Just a DC adaptor and the USB 3.0 cable. PnP does the rest. I will most probably get another at this price. It also came in a nice white color, not pure white but kinda pearlish. It wasn't silver like some posted. Oh, and all the connections/power buttons are on 1 side also, so the front is just nice w/the INEO emblem and the rear has the power button, DC input and USB 3.0 port.

Hey like everything else in life, hindsight is 20-20. I would have definitely saved the $60.00 from the SIIG and bought 2 of these. Oh, and something you will also definitely like is that it only has a single small blue LED light in front right, which just turns red and blinks when activity. My suggestion. Pull the trigger when you can. I'll be having to upgrade some drives to really see it fly.

Sounds good. Thanks for the info on the INEO. Since USB 3.0 stuff is backward compatible then any USB 2.0 dock that dies I'll prolly replace with an INEO. I would think that another fast WD black drive would speed up the whole chain. When I copy large files between the 2 WD 64 MB cache 6Gb drives Explorer usually shows about 120 MB/sec. When I'm processing with MakeMKV from a folder on one of those HDs MakeMKV usually shows a read of over 100 MB/sec. It should really speed up any video stuff you do.

Thermaltake has a case with a hard drive docking station built in to the case. Also the power supply is mounted in the bottom of the case. I might just order one of these cases. It is a nice looking case. The link to that case is below.

That's what HP should have done instead of that USB 2.0 "personal drive" thing they had. Just slide a Sata drive in instead of slowing it down. Another thing I noticed on Egg I think, was a USB 3.0 card with connections to a face plate for the front of the tower. In the face plate are 4 USB 3.0 ports. But I don't have any free slots anyway. Have to be content with what I have now. It gives me plenty of throughput for muxing. Can't complain.
