How to display sub-titles in WMP 11?

I have a MKV video that I know has sub-titles as they display in VLC, but I can't get them to display in WMP. I've already done the following:1. Play > Captions and Subtitle > English 2. Tools > Option > Security > Show local caption when present as below. I've stopped/re-started the video, and hard booted my PC...still no sub-titles. My OS is Vista, with current updates. Is there something else I need to do? Thanks!

Use MediaInfo to find out the type of subtitles and post the info.

Thanks for the swift response. In VLC, under the Media information_Codec Details tab:Stream 2 Type:Subtitle Codec:ssa Language:English. I've looked in WMP for Media information...but I can't seem to find it.

See this program to convert to .srt subs(SubRip format.) They should work with just about anything:

The info with the program is pretty sparse. It may need .NET for the sub conversion library. But if you have XP or later I would say the odds are high it will work.

You may have to extract the sub stream using MkvExtractGui-2.

Both programs are freeware.

Thanks for the info. So, there's no settings I can make to display sub-titles? That seems really strange that Micro-Soft makes one jump through hoops just to display sub-titles that are already imbedded in the video. I'll give it a shot. Thanks again!

I don't know if there are or aren't. I don't use WMP as a rule. I know everything works with .srt so you can't go wrong unless you have graphic subs up high in the picture, such as sign translations and credits at an angle etc..

For your basic subtitles on the bottom .srt should work.

Ah..., the video I have is just one file, there is no .srt file. The sub-titles are embedded with video(not hard-coded). They display in VLC, but not WMP...I'm trying to find a way to display them in WMP, as my VLC player plays video with some 'pixilation', and I don't know how to fix that.

will extract the stream. You can use
mkvmergeGUI to create an .mkv without the sub stream.
Now you have an external file.

I know mkvmergeGUI, I've been using it for years to strip out foreign language subs...but I'm confused as to why I would want to strip out the sub-titles. Don't they need to stay there so I can see them? I just need a way to 'turn them on' in WMP.

When unable to do something one looks for alternatives. If you can find how to turn them on in WMP then I guess the problem will be solved. Not everyone likes a work-around. But I use 'em rather than knocking myself out looking for solutions that may not exist.
