I like Windows 7, even though I'm mostly still using XP (I switch between the two). Cosmetic differences aside, I feel I spend less time waiting for the OS to do something, whereas in XP, there's always seems to be a lot of disk thrashing and stuttering.

Your first step should be if you can run Windows 7.

It's rather hard to say because if you have a lot of software that only goes up to XP, you won't be able to install it in W7 and if you can there's a risk you can make W7 unstable. Some won't install anyway because some give a message or an error during installation. Apart from that, I prefer W7. Never get W Vista because that Windows is useless. I've never known any Windows to cause so much trouble. This is why Microsoft brought W XP back out one time because they got bombarded with so many complaints about W Vista crashing so much and causing other unwanted issues. Keep in mind, Microsoft might stop supporting W XP at any time unless they have already. I use the Home edition of W7 and I'm pleased with it.

Seems the user changed to Vista instead.

Maybe he got a deal. One of those online MS blog guys claimed when he was in Redmond on MS Campus they had Vista DVDs in a bin for $5 just like Bargain Bin books in the bookstore. I'd like to see it with my own eyes though.

well i have been using windows 7 ultimate RTM 7600 and i'm pretty satisfied, i directly switched on to windows 7 , after using windows xp sp3, but later i discovered win Vista and windows 7 were almost the same, and windows 7 is just the upgraded copy of win vista, and i am happy with its features

$5 for vista is still too much.

                    Win7 all the way.
