Hi bzzz,

I see a couple things here;

First, read the Golden Rules Of Burning

Slow down the burn speed (it is set to max).

Also, I believe the following is true;
The HP840b is a rebagged LG 4166B.
</>
You could crossflash your drive to LG firmware, but...
This will be considered a last resource because once you have flashed to LG 4166B your drive will not be recognized as a HP drive, but as a LG 4166B unit. This mean your bundled software may stop working and it will think that you replaced your unit. Also you cannot go back to HP firmware anymore. This is not necessary a bad thing, it just something to keep in mind.

Different firmwares may have different write strategies for different media. This sometimes could help with problems related to write strategies.

Be aware that this will invalidate your warranty. So use it as your last resort.

The x-flash process is simple you will have to flash your drive to an special version of LG firmware. You should flash to version 1.01 using the flash engine from GSA's firmware version 1.00, and then flash to the official 1.02.

Get these files from here: http://italianjob.ifrance.com/
Confirm your drive firmware with IMGburn, DVD Decrypter, etc.

regards, katz

Good Post, Chewy.
I had forgotten that you are able to view the firmware version in Dev. Manager!

What do you think of crossflashing a drive like this?

1st try to get HP to replace on warranty
2nd try to update with approved firmware
3rd try the crossflash
4th throw the damn thing away and buy a drive that is supported by the company that makes it

. how can i get HP to replace the warranty..
Replace the DVD Writer under warranty. Dig out your receipt & warranty papers, & start making phone calls!

...also the firmware version i got on my dvd writer is:

IDE\CDROMHP_DVD_WRITER_840B____________________ED5 6

then i checked the software and driver downloads on the latest firmware

its: DVD_RW 16X HP DVD Writer 840b Drive Firmware Update : date 05-2006 version IMA6

another question...do you think its better for me to get a good dvd writer other than HP dvd writer. if let say they will replace my dvd writer with another HP dvd writer..what are the chances that i will encounter the same problem?

they will want you to try the firmware update first before giving you another drive, so go for it
