Build Speed Very Slow?

I am using DVDRB and I was taking the DVD FILES and building the ISO to my Hard Drive, not a disk. I prefer building to my HDD then burning the ISO to DVD. When I started doing this my speed was up to 25X on the HDD and it took 2 mintes to build. Now it seems I am only building at a speed of 8X on the HDD.

Any ideas, the sytem is a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ and I can rip/encode fast so I think it has noithing to do with DMA which is enabled.

You should expect slow speeds if you're reading/writing to the same hdd. Fragmentation could also be an issue.

Going from one drive to a physically different one is much faster.

How Often??

Thanks, it just surprised me the first time I used ImgBurn to build since I thought I was burning to a DVD when I noticed a speed of 16X, then 20X, then 25X I thought my Samsung DVD-RAM RW burner is only a 16X burner. I was freaking out then saw that it was building to the HDD. When the PC was new I was getting these fast build speeds to the HDD, now it is more like 8X which is what I burn at anyways. I only have the 1 HDD, so read/write.

This is a Media Center PC so I am recording and deleting some big files not to mention the DVD files from a DVD Decrypter rip that get deleted when finished with. Is deframenting very important with a system that has these large dvr-ms files or DVD rip files on it. How often, as an estimate?

I have 2 USB external HDs with one internal. I am always reading from one and writing to another after processing. If I use RI4M to make an ISO of a disc, I always rip it directly to the external drive. When I read that ISO with RI4M again (mounted with Daemon tools), I get up to 21X read speeds.

But this is with AMD Sempron 3100.

Another internal drive will do wonders for your speeds when processing big files. An internal is more desirable than an external drive because greater speeds can be reached. I find DVD Shrink, VobBlanker, DVD Remake Pro, etc is much faster if I read from one drive and write to another. This way the same channel is not used for inputting and outputting.

A 2nd hard drive is well worth the investment in time saved!

EDIT: Never rip from external to external as it will then use 2 USB connections instead of one.

my fastest rip of a 4 gig movie is about 2 minutes between internal drives with plenty of free space and little fragmentation

I rarely see usb anything that can do 16x(23MB/s)

My 2 minute rip is only 33MB/s

raid stripes are fast, but momentary bursts from cache are not sustainable

Quite a few years back I was measuring some transfers between hard drives, w98 sucks,
I posted my results in a 98/performance forum over at the ms newsgroups, some of the regulars
criticized my methods/tools(stop watch/calculator). The resident msmvp came back and said
that was the best methodology as it's "real".
