Error burning with IMG on DL

A log would prove useful in this case.

What brand discs are you using?
Firmware current for burner?
What did the error say in its entirety?

the file was too big to shrink efffectively (55%)

As long as everything is in order & you are using good media, you should have no problem with 55%. I have done lots of episodic dvd's at that compression & had no problems. I would suggest Maximum Smooth for anything less than 65% in Quality Settings. As for your DL, your problem probably stems from the fact that you opened DvdFab Decrypter's output in Dvd Shrink. Dvd Shrink should never be involved in DL. If this is an old classic, I would suggest using Dvd Decrypter (ISO Read) then use ImgBurn to burn that output.

I don't like to reduce that much b/c I watch the DVD's on an HD TV. So you say use DVD Decrypter then IMGBurn, but how will the layer break be done without PGC edit?

There is a firmware update available, but I doubt if it will cure your woes....I've used that same combo (drive, firmware and media) before with no problems.

I watch my dvd's on a 32" Samsung LCD. Try one if you don't like it, what has it cost? A little bit of time & 30 to 50 cents. Remember at that compression it will take a while to analyze & encode.

I am sorry, I forgot about your question on ISO read with Dvd Decrypter. Now this is only for older movies. When you do an ISO read with Dvd Decrypter, it creates two files, ISO & MDS. In ImgBurn when you browse to the file you want to burn, you choose the MDS file which contains the layer break info, not forgetting to booktype for Dvd+R DL Media & burn @ 2.4.

Why are you using PgcEdit...removing unwanted stuff? In build mode Imgburn will take your VIDEO_TS folder and create a double layer ISO and set it's own layer break for you.

How does IMG know to make a DL dvd? SO all I have to do is Fab, Shrink (if I want to remove stuff) and burn with IMG?

I already made 3 DL coasters trying to burn. I hope the firmware will do the trick. I thought the ISO was OK and couldn't understand why IMG wouldn't burn it. IMG used to burn all my DL's without a problem. But it also happened with another old classic recently, so maybe it was the firmware.

It started to burn it and didn't like what it saw about 2/3 of the way thru layer 0. Try that new firmware, failing which a lens cleaner might do the trick.

Make sure DMA is on.
