Samsung's Dual Format HD Player Priced & Dated

If you're in the market for a new TV, be sure to check out our TV buying advice for trusted reviews, guides and news on the best TVs and accessories available.

£800 works out to be around $US 1600, which is more than double the cost of buying both a Blu-ray and HD DVD player. Hopefully, the price will drop to something like $US 700, then it would actually make financial sense to buy a dual format player. Some movies are exclusives to Blu-ray and HD DVD, so if you want to watch all the movies on HD, you'll need two players or a dual format player. For example, if you backed Blu-ray only, you'll miss movies like Children of Men (highly recommended), Serenity, The Bourne Ultimatum (all Universal Studio releases). If you backed HD DVD only, you'll miss even more movies like anything by Fox, Columbia/Tristars/MGM (all owned by Sony). Even studios like Warner Bros. which support both formats, are doing exclusive releases for one format only (for HD DVD, Batman Begins, V for Vendetta, Matrix Trilogy are all HD DVD exclusives - for the moment), and some of Paramount's early HD DVD releases have been better quality than their Blu-ray ones (H.264 vs MPEG-2).
