PGR4 developer clarifies DVD capacity concerns

Meanwhile, Bizarre has responded with the very clear assertion, “We've never had to cut content to fit on the disc, and we probably never will.”

It transpires that the decision to cut day/night tracks was due to the dynamic weather system, which has been much talked about. “Rather than having two "fixed" times of day, this time around we decided to use our time to create a dynamic weather system, which effectively creates a much more dramatic palette from which to work with,” Bizarre explains. It also generously put up a fresh selection of screenshots that shows how this works as well, which you can see here.

The story started when rumour came out that content from PGR4 had to be cut due to the limited space on DVDs. Sony used this rumour to claim that even though adding Blu-ray to the PS3 delayed release by a year and increased the price of the console, it was worth it for the long run as the increased capacity means better content. The PS3 only has 256 MB of system RAM and a further 256 MB of video RAM - how will it cope with having 50 GB worth of texture and models, especially at 1920x1080 resolution, I don't know.

In any case, the rumour turned out to be false. It's funny how all these anti HD DVD and anti Xbox 360 rumours seems to be flying all over the place, and how Sony has declared victory on both formats already.
