    Stats:

For the week ending November 7, 2020, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 40.55% vs 59.45%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $14.29 million
DVD sales total spending: $20.95 million

    These stats available from here:

    Media Play News

    Top 10:

Blu-ray sales improved ever slightly compared to last week, while DVD sales declined. This allowed weekly Blu-ray market share to rise back above 40%.

The Blu-ray top 10 was all over the place this week, most likely because of the low sales numbers involved, but the top-selling title was still My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising.

The top-selling new release, in 7th place, was the 4K re-release of V for Vendetta, while "new" new release Antebellum was in 8th place.

Game of Thrones: The Complete Series, another new release, was in 9th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "V for Vendetta" was, of course, available on UHD, but so was "Antebellum". 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. *My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising
    2. Joker+
    3. 1917+
    4. Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn+
    5. Knives Out+
    6. Sonic the Hedgehog+
    7. *V for Vendetta+
    8. *Antebellum+
    9. Game of Thrones: The Complete Series
    10. Midway+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

For the non Blu-ray exclusive releases, "Game of Thrones: The Complete Series" had the best BD sales share, with 94.19%. "Antebellum" did less well, just failing to get over the 50%.

For the UHD releases, "Antebellum" managed a UHD sales share of 11.94%.

In our new regular feature where we pine for days past, this time last year we had new releases "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw", "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark", and "The Art of Racing in the Rain" in the top 10.

DVD sales total spending: $21.73 million

    Top 10:

A very quiet week (new release wise) saw Blu-ray revenue drop back towards historical lows.

Only two new releases were in the top 20, and the best selling of which, and the week's overall top seller, was My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising.

The other was the Criterion release of Parasite, in 9th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Neither of these two new releases were available on UHD. Only 3 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. *My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising

    Top 10:

Following Amazon's Prime Day sales event, Blu-ray revenue fell back below $20 million yet again as the re-release of the Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy on 4K and standard Blu-ray, the best seller this week, couldn't sell enough copies to keep revenue high.

There were actually quite a few more new releases in the top 20, including Tremors: Shrieker Island in 4th, and the SteelBook version of Princess Mononoke in 9th.

The same range of SteelBooks also landed My Neighbor Totoro in 12th, while we had Chucky Complete 7-Movie Collection in 11th.

Cut Throat City was the last new release in the top 20, at 18th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only "Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy" was made available on UHD. Only 3 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The "Back to the Future" ultimate trilogy box set was also made available on DVD (along with standard Blu-ray and 4K versions), Universal might as well have not bothered since the Blu-ray editions had a BD sales share of 95.71% - meaning only 4.29% of buyers chose to buy the DVD edition.

For the other non Blu-ray exclusive releases, "Cut Throat City" had the best BD sales share with 49.16%, just ahead of "Tremors: Shrieker Island" with 44.46%.

For 4K, "Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy" had an amazing 79.64% UHD sales share, meaning almost everyone thought the 4K edition of this re-release was the edition to buy (the breakdown is as follows: 79.64% of all BTTF box sets sold were the 4K edition, with 16.07% the standard Blu-ray version, and 4.29% the DVD version).

    Top 10:

The Amazon Prime Day sales event helped Blu-ray and DVD sales rise to respectable levels for the first time in a long time, as the online-only sale managed to circumvent the pandemic and the lack of new releases caused by it.

Sales were still down compared to last year's Prime Day event, which took place in July. That particular week saw Blu-ray sales worth $34.27 million, and this year's event was down 26.5%.

There were two new releases in the top 20 though. Batman: Death in the Family sold enough copies to reach second place, while Friday the 13th Collection Deluxe Edition wasn't too far behind in 3rd.

But it was mostly older titles that were heavily discount during Prime Day that sold well for the week, including the likes of Fast & Furious: The Ultimate Ride Collection and Jurassic 5-Movie Collection.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: No new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releases in the top 20 this week. Only 3 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Harry Potter Complete 8-Film Collection

Finally, we break the unwanted record. Blu-ray sales actually managed to increase compared to the same week last year, due to Amazon Prime Day happening at a different time this year.

Blu-ray sales increased by $1.51m (up 6.4%), with unit sales down 13.6%.

DVD sales decreased by $3.35m (down 11.7%), with unit sales down 22.3%.

DVD sales total spending: $20.70 million

    These stats available from here:

    Top 10:

Blu-ray sales improved slightly off of the last few week's low (still the worst set of results since 2009) as new releases are still thin on the ground.

The best selling new release was Star Trek: Picard - Season One. Streaming shows usually don't sell well on Blu-ray, but Blu-ray sales have been so low that "Picard" managed to grab second place on this week's Blu-ray top 10. The top spot actually went to perennial favourite, "Hocus Pocus", but only just (less than 1% difference).

Third and fourth places were also new releases, with Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna easily beating The Tax Collector.

The 4K re-release of 300 was 6th, while the new version of The Secret Garden was 7th.

The Best Buy exclusive 4K SteelBook re-release of Interstellar was the only other new release in the top 20, coming in at 14th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-release of "300", only "The Tax Collector" was made available on 4K, and it was a Best Buy SteelBook version. Only 4 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Hocus Pocus
    2. Star Trek: Picard - Season One
    3. Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna
    4. The Tax Collector+
    5. *Beetlejuice+
    6. *300+
    7. The Secret Garden
    8. The Nightmare Before Christmas
    9. Sonic the Hedgehog+
    10. Rick and Morty: Season 4

"Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna" had the best BD sales share out of not only this week's new releases, but all Blu-ray titles this week, with a BD sales share of 95.22%.

"Star Trek: Picard — Season One" did okay as well, with 55.67%, just ahead of "The Tax Collector" with 51.92%.

"The Secret Garden" had to settle for a below 50% share of 48.84%.

On 4K, despite being a Best Buy exclusive, "The Tax Collector" still managed a UHD sales share of 10.74%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray sales continued to decline off of last week's historic lows, but only slightly, as the lack of new releases meant that the only new release in the top 10 was the Best Buy exclusive 4K SteelBook version of The Evil Dead 1 & 2 dual movie pack.

Outside of the top 10, another Best Buy exclusive, the 4K SteelBook version of Mad Max: Fury Road was in 13th. The Criterion release of The Elephant Man was 16th, while the Blu-ray only releaseMy Hero Academia: Season Four, Part One was 18th.

Overall, the top 20 had a very Halloween looking feel to it (Rob Zombie must be rolling in it right now), as is the case this time ever year.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-releases, none of the other releases had UHD editions. 5 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Only The Criterion release of "The Elephant Man" wasn't a Blu-ray exclusive this week, but it did not get a high enough Blu-ray market share to get into the top 20 (so below 31.71%).

    Top 10:

Another unwanted record as Blu-ray sales dropped to levels not seen since August 30, 2009.

This is despite two new releases and two 4K re-releases in the top 10, including Rick and Morty: Season 4 in top spot.

The 4K re-release of Full Metal Jacket on 4K helped the title reach second place, while another 4K re-release, Whiplash, was 17th. In between the two was new release The Secret: Dare to Dream, coming in at 6th on the Blu-ray sales chart.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The two non 4K only re-releases weren't made available on 4K. Only 3 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue stayed at record low levels as new release Outlander: Season Five was the top selling title for the week.

It was just head of Weathering With You in 2nd place, and the Blu-ray only re-releases of Shivers and Little Monsters in 5th and 6th.

That was it for new releases though. '1917' made a return to the top 10.

Of the non Blu-ray exclusive new releases, 'Weathering With You' had the best BD sales share with 89.83% while 'Outlander: Season Five' had to settle for 43%.

    Stats:

For the week ending September 12, 2020, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 37.54% vs 62.46%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $13.17 million
DVD sales total spending: $21.91 million

    These stats available from here:

    Media Play News

    Top 10:

Despite a healthy number of new, re-releases and Blu-ray exclusives in the top 20, Blu-ray revenue was largely unchanged from the low level recorded in the previous couple of weeks.

DC Universe animated feature film Superman: Man of Tomorrow was the best-selling out of all the new releases, earning it a top spot finish on the Blu-ray sales chart. It was a Blu-ray only release, with both a standard Blu-ray version and a 4K Blu-ray version.

The 4K re-release of the original animated version of Ghost in the Shell was in a distant second place.

The Target exclusive Rob Zombie Trilogy Blu-ray box set wasn't too far behind in 3rd place - the general release version is coming in a few week's time. This mean the top 3 were all Blu-ray exclusives.

5th place was occupied by True History of the Kelly Gang, while the Best Buy exclusive The Incredible Hulk (2008 version), another Blu-ray exclusive, was in 7th.

The 60th anniversary edition of Psycho was in 14th place, just ahead of the 4K The Alfred Hitchcock Collection. Both were Blu-ray exclusives.

Hocus Pocus returns to the top 10, as per Halloween tradition. The 4K version arrives the week after the one reported on here. 2020's 'The Invisible Man' also returns to the top 10, likely for similar Halloween related reasons.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-releases, only 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow' was available on UHD. 5 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

For UHD sales share, only 'Superman: Man of Tomorrow' wasn't a 4K exclusive and it got a UHD sales share of 13.43%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue improved slightly, just slightly, thanks to a couple of 4K re-releases in the top 10.

Beetlejuice and The Goonies were both made available on 4K for the first time, and came in 1st and and 2nd.

Also new was Rogue in 3rd place and Pitch Black: Limited Edition in 10th.

Children of the Sea was the only other new release, in 18th.

A few Chadwick Boseman got back into the top 10 following the tragic death of the actor, with Black Panther in 3rd and 21 Bridges in 8th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-releases, none of the other new releases were made available on UHD. 5 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

For UHD sales share, 65.14% of 'The Goonies' sales were for the 4K version, while it was 63.81% for 'Beetlejuice'.

The poor results was largely due to the lack of new releases, with The King of Staten Island being the only new release in the top 10 (coming in at only 3rd), with the Steelbook edition of Kiki’s Delivery Service being the only other new release in the top 20 (at 13th).

'Bad Boys for Life' returns to the top 10.

That was pretty much it in terms of new releases in the top 20, as the COVID-19 release lull continues to bite.

New releases from this week last year included 'UglyDolls' and 'Long Shot', hardly the most popular titles, but Blu-ray sales were still up. The only silver lining is that DVD sales are declining at a slower rate.
