    Stats:

For the week ending September 5, 2020, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 36.74% vs 62.29%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $13.19 million
DVD sales total spending: $22.71 million

    These stats available from here:

    Media Play News

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue improved slightly, just slightly, thanks to a couple of 4K re-releases in the top 10.

Beetlejuice and The Goonies were both made available on 4K for the first time, and came in 1st and and 2nd.

Also new was Rogue in 3rd place and Pitch Black: Limited Edition in 10th.

Children of the Sea was the only other new release, in 18th.

A few Chadwick Boseman got back into the top 10 following the tragic death of the actor, with Black Panther in 3rd and 21 Bridges in 8th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K re-releases, none of the other new releases were made available on UHD. 5 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. *Beetlejuice+
    2. *The Goonies+
    3. Black Panther+
    4. Trolls World Tour+
    5. Rogue
    6. *Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons
    7. Scoob!+
    8. 21 Bridges
    9. Harry Potter Complete 8-Film Collection
    10. *Pitch Black: Limited Edition

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

The five Blu-ray/4K only releases aside, 'Rogue' just failed to get over 50% in BD sales share with 49.66%.

For UHD sales share, 65.14% of 'The Goonies' sales were for the 4K version, while it was 63.81% for 'Beetlejuice'.

In our new regular feature where we pine for days past, this time last year we had new releases 'Men in Black: International', 'Ma', and 'Booksmart', all in the top 10.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $11.24m (down 46.0%), with unit sales down 38.8%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue again dropped to become the lowest since September 13, 2009, while DVD sales dropped to levels not seen since the early 2000s.

The poor results was largely due to the lack of new releases, with The King of Staten Island being the only new release in the top 10 (coming in at only 3rd), with the Steelbook edition of Kiki’s Delivery Service being the only other new release in the top 20 (at 13th).

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: No new 4K releases in the top 20 this week. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue rose slightly off last week's record low, as three new releases in the top 10 helped to list sales slightly.

Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons was the top seller for the week, easily outselling 'Trolls World Tour'.

The Outpost was in 3rd place and the Blu-ray/4K re-release of Flash Gordon was in 5th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Flash Gordon' was made available on 4K. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

    Top 10:

We have a new record low, with Blu-ray sales at their lowest levels since September 13, 2009. The fact that the only new release in the top 20 was the 45th anniversary re-release of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which came in 6th on the Blu-ray top sellers chart.

'Bad Boys for Life' returns to the top 10.

That was pretty much it in terms of new releases in the top 20, as the COVID-19 release lull continues to bite.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: No 4K new releases in the top 20. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Blu-ray revenue dropped again, to the second lowest set of weekly results in 2020, while weekly Blu-ray market share dropped below 40% as well.

This is not surprising considering the lack of new releases, with Gundala in 15th being the only new release in the top 20.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Gundala' wasn't available on 4K. 7 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

New releases from this week last year included 'UglyDolls' and 'Long Shot', hardly the most popular titles, but Blu-ray sales were still up. The only silver lining is that DVD sales are declining at a slower rate.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $5.68m (down 27.3%), with unit sales down 30.8%.

    Top 10:

The release of Scoob! on Blu-ray wasn't enough to stop Blu-ray revenue falling from the two week ago "high" set by 'Trolls World Tour'.

We actually had quiet a few new releases this week, but other than 'Scoob!', non were close to being A-list.

Capone did the best out of the rest with a 4th place finish, while Resistance was 6th.

Survive the Night got 7th, while the Criterion Collection edition of Marriage Story was 8th.

And all the way down in 15th was the 4K re-release of Spartacus.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than 'Spartacus', only 'Scoob!' was available on 4K. Only 4 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The fact that none of these releases got over 50% suggests that these weren't the usual high sellers on Blu-ray.

    Top 10:

There were two new releases in the top 20, which is considered quite a lot these days. The best selling of these was Criterion's Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits, in 2nd place, and also from Criterion, the Russian classic Come and See.

Otherwise, it was quiet again and the Blu-ray revenue figures reflect this.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Neither of these new releases were available on 4K as we continue to wait for Criterion to embrace UHD. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Trolls World Tour+

Both of the new releases were Criterion Blu-ray only releases, so technically, BD sales share of 100%.

'Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits' was no match for 'Shazam!' it seems. I mean at this point, it's kind of sadistic to even make the comparison to last year when the world was normal and we actually had new movies on Blu-ray.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $15.74m (down 45.8%), with unit sales down 41.8%.

    Stats:

For the week ending July 11, 2020, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 42.84% vs 57.16%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $20.21 million
DVD sales total spending: $26.97 million

    These stats available from here:

    Top 10:

We finally have a notable release, the straight to premium SVOD animated hit, Trolls World Tour. It was easily the top selling title for the week, outsold 'Sonic the Hedgehog' (the previous major release, released all the way back in May) by more than 19 times.

Even the Trolls 2-Movie Collection managed to get a second place finish, although very far away from the top seller.

The Criterion edition of the 1953 The War of the Worlds was the only other new Blu-ray in the top 20, coming in at 15th.

Thanks to the new release, this was the best week since the end of May (when Sonic was released).

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Trolls World Tour' was available on UHD. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Trolls World Tour+
    2. Trolls 2-Movie Collection
    3. Sonic the Hedgehog+
    4. Force of Nature
    5. Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker+
    6. The Call of the Wild+
    7. Onward+
    8. 1917+
    9. Dolittle+
    10. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw+

'Trolls World Tour' got 61% for BD sales share and 6.11% for UHD sales share. It even had a 3D version, which did atrociously bad like most 3D releases these days, with only a sales share of 0.02% (that's only 2 copies of the 3D edition sold for every 10,000 copies of all disc formats for the movie).

This "all red week" was harder to take since 'Pet Sematary' shouldn't be a bigger hit than 'Trolls World Tour'. But the fact that hardly any new releases were released recently compared to the likes of 'Captain Marvel' and 'Dumbo' that were still selling well this time last year, is what really caused this week's relatively poor showing.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $4.26m (down 17.4%), with unit sales down 25.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $1.54m (down 5.4%), with unit sales down 11.0%.

This meant $5.80 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 46.19% to 42.84%.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Force of Nature wasn't made available on UHD. 9 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Blu-ray revenue fell again this week, making it the new worst set of results since September 11, 2010, replacing last week's record. The COVID-19 caused lack of new releases continue, with only one new release in the top 10, The Hunt in second place, and coupled with the economic downturn, the poor results is therefore completely understandable.

The politically motivated buying of Gone With the Wind helped it to re-enter the top 100 at 5th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: No new 4K releases in the top 20 this week. 8 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

It's fair to say that for the next few months, almost every week will be an "all red" week in which every metric from the currently examine week will be below that of the same week a year ago. This week certainly, because it's 'The Hunt' up against 'Captain Marvel'!

A lack of new releases, cased by the COVID-19 pandemic, has seen Blu-ray revenue dip to $16 million, the lowest I can remember for several years (edit: lowest since September 11, 2010!). Blu-ray market share also dipped below 40%.

Two new entries popped up in the top 10, with the 4K only 45th-anniversary re-release of Jaws, in 6th place, outselling the other new release Watchmen (the 2019 HBO limited series) in 10th.

With no big blockbuster releases in theaters until July at the earliest, this will become the new normal for the next couple of months at least.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Jaws', being a 4K only release, was obviously available on 4K UHD. 'Watchmen', on the other hand, did not have a 4K release. 9 titles in this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Another "all red" week in which every metric below was worse off when compared to the same week a year ago. Expect more of this for most the year, if not into 2021.
