    Stats:

For the week ending June 2, 2018, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 42.25% vs 57.75%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $24.71 million
DVD sales total spending: $33.78 million

    These stats available from here:

    Top 10:

It's a quiet week for new releases, and Blu-ray and DVD sales took a relative tumble as a result.

The week's only new release in the top 20 was Annihilation, which only came 2nd in the overall charts, behind the still number one 'Black Panther'.

(It's also worth noting that 'Annihilation', while in a normal release in the American, Canadian and Chinese markets, was a Netflix exclusive everywhere else and has been streaming on the platform since the film's theatrical release plus 17 days)

So as a result, Blu-ray revenue fell to the lowest level since February.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'Annihilation' was available on UHD. So 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Black Panther+
    2. Annihilation
    3. Red Sparrow+
    4. The Greatest Showman+
    5. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi+
    6. Fifty Shades Freed+
    7. Game Night
    8. Peter Rabbit+
    9. Deadpool+
    10. Thor: Ragnarok+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

BD sales share for a title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this movie that contained the Blu-ray edition of the film (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

'Annihilation' managed a first week BD sales share of 68.90%

DVD sales decreased by $11.38m (down 25.2%), with unit sales down 23.5%.

This meant $14.13 million less in combined revenue for the week.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray (and DVD) sales fell back down to more "normal" levels, as last week's mega A-list release, 'Black Panther', dropped back in sales following its debut. It was still the week's top seller though, as the actual top selling new release, Red Sparrow, only managed to grab second place (and a very distant second place too, selling 5 times fewer copies than 'Black Panther').

Game Night in 3rd place was another new release, as was The 15:17 to Paris in 8th.

Outside of the top 20, Early Man in 13th and I Kill Giants in 14th were the rest of the new releases.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only one of this week's new releases, 'Red Sparrow', was made available on UHD. So 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

'Red Sparrow' had the highest BD sales share of the previously mentioned new releases, with 61.97%. 'Early Man' got 50%.

None of the rest managed a BD sales share of over 50%, but 'Game Night' and 'I Kill Giants' both managed 48%, with 'The 15:17 to Paris' getting 45%.

'Red Sparrow' did well on UHD, with a UHD sales share of 11.82%.

'Logan' was released this time last year, and it, along with a few other releases, represented a week that had better releases than this week (the unit sales stats are more indicative of this), despite Black Panther's strong run. But rising weekly Blu-ray market share helped to prevent an "all red" week.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $6.44m (down 17.5%), with unit sales down 19.4%.

DVD sales decreased by $9.7m (down 21.8%), with unit sales down 22.7%.

This meant $16.14 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 45.27% to 46.60%.

A big A-list release this week propelled Blu-ray revenue above the $50 million mark, and weekly Blu-ray market share went above 50% as well.

That big release was Black Panther, which easily outsold everything else in its path. As an interesting note, this is the first big Disney releases not to be released with a Blu-ray + DVD edition, with Disney starting the move away from the oldest of the optical disc formats. Disney has still made available a DVD only edition of Black Panther.

There weren't many other new releases this week, which is not at all surprising. Rick and Morty: Season 3 in 7th place was the best selling of the other new releases.

And lastly, in 15th, Samson was the only other new release this week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Of this week's new releases in the top 20, only 'Black Panther' was made available on UHD. So 7 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue picked up a little this week while DVD revenue was mostly flat.

The top selling new release for the week, which was also the week's overall top seller, was Fifty Shades Freed. The 3-movie collection box set for the Fifty Shade Trilogy made the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart at 12th place, but failed to find a spot in the Blu-ray only top 20.

Batman Ninja did make the top 20, at 4th, while the 4K re-release of Saving Private Ryan settled for a 13th place finish.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Of the three previously mentioned new releases in the top 20, one was a 4K exclusive ('Saving Private Ryan'), while 'Fifty Shades Freed' did make a UHD edition available. So 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

'Fifty Shades Freed' on UHD managed a sales share of 5.46%, compared to 3% for 'Fifty Shades Darker' a year ago.

Blu-ray and DVD revenue remained largely unchanged compared to the previous week. This is despite five new releases in the top 20, including the week's top seller, Peter Rabbit.

It easily outsold the number two title, and also new release, 12 Strong.

It was then down to 7th for the next new release, Winchester.

Outside of the top 10, Mary and the Witch’s Flower finished in 11th, while the latest in the ''Tremors' series Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell was at 14th.

A few good releases, but none that did terrific business at the (U.S.) box office, and so Blu-ray revenue remained near last week's relative lows.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure was the week's top selling new release and overall top seller on both Blu-ray and DVD, just squeezing past 'The Greatest Showman' to the top spot this week. Maze Runner Trilogy also managed to get a top 10 finish, at 10th.

There were 6 other new releases in the top 20. Den of Thieves in 4th place was the best selling of the rest, just ahead of Hostiles in 5th place.

While it did great in overseas markets and was a critic favourite, Paddington 2 had to settle for 7th place this week on debut.

Forever My Girl was in 11th, while Grease: 40th Anniversary Edition rounded off the new releases (in the top 20) at 17th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Three out of three of this week's seven new releases (in the top 20) were available on UHD, including top seller 'Maze Runner: Death Cure'. The other titles were 'Hostiles' and the 40th anniversary re-release of 'Grease'. So 7 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Being a re-release, 'Grease' naturally had the best BD sales share, with 86.99% choosing to buy the movie on Blu-ray. The 'Maze Runner Trilogy', being a similar type of release, also did well with 63.38%. The week's actual top seller, 'Maze Runner: The Death Cure', managed 57.95%, just ahead of the 57.87% earned by 'Den of Thieves'.

'Paddington 2' also got above the 50% mark with 50.95%.

'Hostiles' got 43% while 'Forever My Girl' got 30%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue recovered slightly from the lows of last week (due to the post-Easter lull), and the release of a A-list-ish release in the form of The Greatest Showman helped in the recovery too.

It was actually a week full of new releases in the top 20, with no less than 7 other new releases. Apart from 'The Greatest Showman', the best selling of these was Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay in 4th place.

In 6th place was Outlander: Season Three, and in 10th was Proud Mary.

Outside of the top 10, we have Molly’s Game in 11th, Phantom Thread in 13th, All the Money in the World in 15th and Braven in 16th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Two of this week's new releases (in the top 20) were available on UHD, including top seller 'The Greatest Showman'. The other title was 'Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay', although 'Phantom Thread' has since been released on UHD. So out of the top 10, eight titles had UHD editions.

So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

Of this week's 8 new releases, 'Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay' had the highest BD sales share with 70.21%. 'The Greatest Showman' wasn't too far behind with a result of 65.62%.

'Molly’s Game' got 58.68%, 'Phantom Thread' got 57.48%, while 'Braven' got 47.41%.

'Outlander: Season Three' got 43.12% and 'All the Money in the World' got 43.02%.

    'Proud Mary' got 37%.

Of the two titles released on UHD, 'The Greatest Showman' had the highest UHD sales share of 6.82%, while 'Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay' got 5.49%.

Another unfair comparison as we're comparing a relatively normal week with last year's pre-Easter bump, but weekly Blu-ray market share prevented an "all red" week in the end.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $14.54m (down 28.5%), with unit sales down 29.0%.

DVD sales decreased by $24.26m (down 36.4%), with unit sales down 35.8%.

    Stats:

For the week ending April 7, 2018, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 42.50% vs 57.50%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $30.73 million
DVD sales total spending: $41.57 million

    These stats available from here:

The huge week for Blu-ray last week made way for the Easter sales lull this week, as Blu-ray and DVD revenue both fell back.

As is the case with other Easter lulls, this ones was also light on new releases, with Insidious: The Last Key in 6th and Father Figures in 9th being the only new releases in the top 10. The top selling title was still Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi.

Looking Glass was the only other new release in the top 20, at 17th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: None of this week's new releases (in the top 20) were available on UHD. So out of the top 10, eight titles had UHD editions (all but the two new releases).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi+
    2. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle+
    3. Thor: Ragnarok+
    4. Justice League+
    5. Coco+

Again not the fairest comparison between two weeks, since we're comparing the Easter lull, one of the quietest weeks of the year, to last year's 'Rogue One'. An "all red" week was all but guaranteed.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $36.96m (down 54.6%), with unit sales down 53.3%.

DVD sales decreased by $18.16m (down 30.4%), with unit sales down 25.5%.

Thanks for the clarification. Can you point me to the source for this? MPN's own unit sales figures put DVD unit sale market share at 62.89% for the week ending March 31, which seems about right when compared to the revenue share due to the lower average pricing of DVDs. If NPD puts DVD unit sale at only 37.7% (compared to MPN's 62.89%), then that seems a bit low to be honest, and would only translate to a revenue share of mid 20s for DVD (the average BD cost according to MPN is $20.65 compared to only $10.27 for DVDs). If such a discrepancy exists, then I'm inclined not to include the NPD graphs in the future (which I've only done so starting recently because it has separate UHD numbers).

    Correction on data set

    Top 10:

A huge week for Blu-ray thanks to a huge new release on Blu-ray - Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi. It was also the pre-Easter week, which always gives a nice bump to disc sales.

Suffice to say, it was easily the top selling title of the week, outselling 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' by 5-to-1.

The only other new release in the top 20 was Acts of Violence, all the way in 20th place.

The release of the latest Star Wars movies does give us a new point of comparison, since we can go back and see how the previous two Star Wars movies have done on Blu-ray. 'Rogue One', while not a "saga" movie, was also one of 2017's biggest releases and for the week it was released, Blu-ray revenue was at $67.62 million. This meant that 'The Last Jedi' easily beat 'Rogue One'. But a comparison with 'The Force Awakens' is probably more appropriate given 'The Last Jedi' is a direct sequel. 'The Force Awakens' was 2016's biggest release, and was in the top 10 for almost all of the year after release. For the week it was released, Blu-ray revenue was at a near record $93.40 million. This bests 'The Last Jedi' by more than 19%.

While some of that is down to the decline in physical media sales, some of it is also down to the fact that 'The Last Jedi' was a smaller box office draw than 'The Force Awakens' (which is also not surprising given historical results for Star Wars sequels). But given that this week was also the pre-Easter bump, the figures for 'The Last Jedi' starts to look less impressive.

One interesting point is that 'The Last Jedi' is the first Star Wars film to be made available on Ultra HD Blu-ray, which brings us to ...

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 'The Last Jedi' was available on UHD as mentioned only a sentence ago, but 'Acts of Violence' was not. So out of the top 10, eight titles had UHD editions. Data provided by NPD (see graphics above) shows that UHD sales share was at 8.8% for this week, the highest since January 20th (this was the week that 'Blade Runner 2049' was released, and it had a more impressive showing on UHD).

(Data gathered by the NPD differs from the other data here and is only for the top 50 best selling titles. The other data here are gathered by Media Play News Research).

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

    5. Justice League+

    8. Wonder+
    9. *Lady and the Tramp: Signature Collection
    10. The Star

'Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi' did fantastically on Blu-ray, earning a first week BD sales share of 80.03%. 'Acts of Violence' manged 39%.

And now for the number everyone is waiting for (well, at least me anyway). On UHD, 'The Last Jedi' managed a first week UHD sales share of 14.81%, which is fairly impressive given the relatively low take up date of Ultra HD at the moment.

Not the fairest comparison between two weeks, since while last year's 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' was also a big release, this year also happened to be the pre-Easter bump, which occurred during a different week last year. A rare "all green" week was therefore the result, as you can see below.

Blu-ray sales increased by $22.97m (up 43.8%), with unit sales up 47.3%.

    Top 10:

Blu-ray sales dropped a bit from the highs of the last two week, but was still hovering just under the $50 million mark. Weekly Blu-ray market share also dropped below 50%.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was the headlining new release of the week, also easily the week's top seller and ahead of last week's number one, 'Justice League'.

Another new release, Pitch Perfect 3 was in 3rd place, while Downsizing in 8th was the only remaining new release in the top 20.

So not a week with a huge number of new releases, but big enough releases to ensure Blu-ray revenue was still at a relative high.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All three of this week's new releases in the top 20 had UHD editions. It was nearly a perfect run for UHD in the top 10, but Disney's 'Lady and the Tramp: Signature Collection' ruined the party for everyone. So out of the top 10, nine titles had UHD editions. Data provided by NPD (see graphics above) shows that UHD sales share was at 4.9% for this week, practically unchanged from last week.

On UHD, the ordering was different. 'Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle' had the best UHD sales share, with 6.57%, compared to 4.59% for 'Pitch Perfect 3' and 4.25% for 'Downsizing'.

Blu-ray sales continued its recent good run and even improved upon last week's result, which was also the best so far this year.

The title largely responsible for this is Justice League, which soared to the top of the sales charts with ease, selling more than twice as many copies as last week's (also superhero inspired) number one, 'Thor: Ragnarok'.

Third place was also occupied by a new release in the form of Ferdinand.

Then it's down to 5th, 6th and 7th for the next block of new releases, Oscar Best Picture winner The Shape of Water, Call Me By Your Name and I, Tonya.

And finally, in 10th spot, The Disaster Artist was the last of the new releases in the top 20.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Again, three out of this week's previously mentioned new releases had UHD editions. The three titles were also the three best selling new releases, 'Justice League', 'Ferdinand', and 'The Shape of Water'. So out of the top 10, five titles had UHD editions. Data provided by NPD (see graphics above) shows that UHD sales share was at 7.0% for this week, practically unchanged from last week.

'Ferdinand' had the next best BD sales share, with 59.14%, just ahead of 'I, Tonya' with 58.05%. 'Call Me By Your Name' managed 55.39%.

'Justice League' was the only of the new releases to be made available on 3D, and it only recorded a BD3D sales share of 1.56%.

For the UHD releases, 'The Shape of Water' had the best sales share at 12.18%, but it was only slightly higher than the 12.04% recorded by 'Justice League'. 'Ferdinand' managed 2.71% on UHD.
