Blu-ray vs DVD: 35.62% vs 64.38%

Top 10:

Blu-ray sales further declined past even last week's historical lows to make this week the new record low since August 30, 2009.

This is despite one new release and a couple of Blu-ray re-releases in the top 20. The best-selling of these new releases was the Best Buy 4K SteelBook exclusive version of Dirty Dancing, coming in second.

Closely behind in third place was the week's "new" new release, Vanquish, which was again closely followed by another new re-release, the 4K limited edition of Donnie Darko.

Finally, in 15th, was the last new release, another re-release, the 4K edition of The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The week's only non 4K re-release, "Vanquish", wasn't made available on 4K. 8 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

The BD sales share for a particular title is the percentage of disc packages sold for this title that contained the film's Blu-ray edition (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). "Vanquish" managed to get a BD sales share of 44.66%, while all the other new releases were Blu-ray exclusives.

In our new regular feature where we pine for days past (although we are already in parts of last year when the pandemic was hitting all of us hard), this time last year we had the new releases "Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge" in the top 10.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $8.3m (down 43.5%), with unit sales down 43.0%.

DVD sales decreased by $11.69m (down 37.5%), with unit sales down 37.3%.

This meant $19.99 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 37.97% to 35.62%

Top 10:

Blu-ray sales recovered a bit from last week's historical lows thanks to a couple of new releases in the top 20.

The best selling title of the week was a new release in the form of The Little Things, displacing "Wonder Woman 1984" from the top spot it has held on to for several weeks.

The next new release was the 4K edition of Speed, selling enough copies to get into 3rd place.

Judas and the Black Messiah in 4th was the next new release, while The Virtuoso in 7th rounded off the new releases in the top 10.

And finally, in 19th, we have the 4K release of Big Fish.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: The two non 4K only releases didn't get 4K editions. 6 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

"Judas and the Black Messiah" got a BD sales share of 55.21%, while "The Little Things" had to settle for 48.77%.

"The Virtuoso" got 46.12%.

Top 10:

Quite a few new releases popped into the top 20 this week, but Blu-ray revenue hovered around record lows once again despite this.

The best selling new release was Justice Society: World War II, which also happened to be the overall best seller for the week on Blu-ray.

The Marksman wasn't too far behind in second place (and was actually the top seller on DVD).

There was another new release in 3rd place, the 4K release of Saw. The next new release was the 20th anniversary of Shrek. Another 20th anniversary release was The Fast and the Furious, in 9th.

The Criterion edition of Fast Times at Ridgemont High came 11th, while the last of the new releases in the top 20 was The Legend of Hei in 18th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Justice Society: World War II" and "Shrek" were both non 4K only releases that had 4K editions. 8 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

Looking at the BD sales share of those non Blu-ray/4K exclusive releases, "The Marksman" had the highest BD sales share with 41.45%, with the other titles not ranking high enough to get into the top 20.

In terms of 4K sales share, "Shrek" got an amazing 72.89%, followed by "The Fast and the Furious" with 63.95%. "Justice Society: World War II" got 16.84%.

Top 10:

A couple of relatively big releases this week, and a bunch of other smaller releases, and Blu-ray revenue instantly jumped $4 million higher, even though we're still talking about historical lows here for the format.

One of those big releases was Raya and the Last Dragon, easily the week's top seller. Another big release was Tom & Jerry in (a distant) second place.

Both movies were "pandemic releases", meaning they missed out on major theatrical runs and had to settle for fast-tracked streaming.

The third of this week's new releases were also a pandemic release, Above Suspicion, in 5th place.

Star Trek: Lower Decks — Season 1 was closely behind in 6th, while Oscar favorite Minari was in 8th.

The 4K release of Animal House was the next new release, in 9th. Outside of the top 10, Cosmic Sin was in 11th, the 4K SteelBook release of Last Action Hero was in 12th, with the 4K release of The Sting in 15th.

Dragonheart 5-Movie Collection was the last of the new releases in the top 20.

Phew.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K only releases, "Raya and the Last Dragon" was the only other release that had a 4K editions. 5 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

In terms of 4K sales share, "Raya" got 13.03%.

"Sonic" was known as the last big release before the "pandemic dry patch" started. As a result, we will no longer be doing this comparison going forward.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $8.67m (down 35.7%), with unit sales down 39.3%.

DVD sales decreased by $8.95m (down 31.0%), with unit sales down 33.4%.

This meant $17.62 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 45.68% to 43.94%. The market share was the best one for Blu-ray in a while (the best since December 5, 2020).

Top 10:

Chaos Walking was the best-selling new release for the week ending May 29, 2021, but it only managed to be the third most popular title on Blu-ray.

It was one of no less than 8 new releases in the top 20. Supernatural: The Fifteenth and Final Season was the next best selling new release, in 5th place. The complete series box set was in 15th.

The 4K re-release of Super 8 was in 9th, with another 4K re-release, My Fair Lady, in 11th, with the third 4K re-release being The Birds in 18th.

The last two spots in the top 20 were also new releases, Explorers and Ultraman Leo: The Complete Series, both Blu-ray only releases.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Apart from 4K only releases, only "Chaos Walking" had a UHD version. 7 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

Top 10:

The Courier was the week's top-selling new release, but it was only able to finish in 6th place in an otherwise quiet week.

Sales dropped back to a lower level after the last two weeks saw a slight increase in sales thanks to the release of "Raya and the Last Dragon". The Disney animated film was still this week's top seller.

The next new release was all the way down in 19th, the 4K release of Smokey and the Bandit. 20th was also a new release, Endangered Species.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Smokey and the Bandit" was the only new title this week (in the top 20) available on 4K. 7 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

Top 10:

Blu-ray market share rose above 40% for the first time in a while, but that was largely due to a drop in DVD sales. It might be that it was just a very slow week, but a couple of high profile Blu-ray only releases helped the format rise slightly above the mediocre.

One of those titles was Indiana Jones 4-Movie Collection, narrowly missing out on being the most popular Blu-ray title for the week (which was last week's top seller, "Raya and the Last Dragon").

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children was also new and also a Blu-ray only affair (4K only, actually0, but it was in a distant 3rd place.

It was down to 8th for the next new release, City of Lies. This movie was at least made available on DVD. The only other new release in the top 20 was Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, another Blu-ray only release.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Indiana Jones 4-Movie Collection" was made available on 4K. 8 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

Both the "Indy Quadrilogy", "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children" and "Ferris Bueller’s Day Off" were Blu-ray only releases, so their BD sales share would nominally be 100% (they are listed as 99.76%, 99.97% and 61.77% respectively in the market share chart linked to below because older DVD edition sales were included in the calculation - in our calculation, we ignore these and only report BD sales share if an equivalently DVD edition was made available for sale).

As the only non Blu-ray exclusive release, "City of Lies" managed a BD sales share of 57.65%.

For 4K sales share (again the caveat about "equivalent non 4K edition being made available" also holds true), "Indiana Jones 4-Movie Collection" got a massive 91.62% UHD sales share, meaning that practically nobody purchased the standard Blu-ray edition of this box set.

Top 10:

Blu-ray sales jumped back up again thanks to the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, which was easily the top seller for the week ending June 19, 2021.

The three movie box set featuring this latest movie as well as "Godzilla: King of the Monsters" and "Kong: Skull Island" was also in the top 10, coming in at 5th.

While the Godzilla/Kong cross-over movie was the clear top seller, there were other new releases in the top 20 too, including Voyagers in 8th.

The SteelBook re-release of Sicario was 9th and the last new release in the top 20.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All of the new releases mentioned above were available on 4K (except for the Godzilla/Kong 3-movie box set). 8 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

"Godzilla vs. Kong" had a good BD sales share of 65.98%, and a 4K sales share of 22.23%. It even had a 3D edition, with a higher than expected 11.92% in terms of 3D sales share.

"Voyagers" did a little bit less well on Blu-ray, with a BD sales share of 53.73%, and a 4K sales share of 13.98%.

Top 10:

If you've noticed the uptick in sales in the stats above, it's due to the Amazon Prime Day sale event. This also explains why the titles in the top 20 feature many older releases, such as the "Fast & Furious 8-Movie Collection" and "Cowboy Bebop: The Complete Series". Titles like Jurassic 5-Movie Collection also returned to the top 10 for this sale event, just like during last year's event. Overall, this particular Prime Day event was comparable to the last, which also happened during the pandemic. Blu-ray sales was down slightly, but DVD sales increased a little bit.

There were new releases in the top 20 though, including the action hit Nobody in second place. Third was also featured a new release, Batman: The Long Halloween — Part One.

The Unholy in 7th was the only other new release in the top 20.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only "Nobody" had a 4K UHD edition. 7 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

It's great to finally be able to see some "green" in the stats below, even if it was the slightly unfair comparison between a week with the Amazon Prime Day sale event and just a normal week last year.

With Amazon Prime Day over and done with for the year, and without any major new releases for the week ending July 3 2021, Blu-ray revenue fell back down again.

The 4K release of Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory was the best selling of the new releases this week, coming in at 6th.

His Dark Materials: The Complete Second Season in 10th was the next best-selling new release. The Blu-ray exclusive release of The Strangeness in 13th was the last of the new releases in the top 20.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Neither "His Dark Materials: The Complete Second Season" and "The Strangeness" were made available on UHD. 5 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

Top 10:

Blu-ray sales continued to fall as the 4K release of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was the top-selling new release. It only came 5th though, just ahead of the 4K release of Space Jam - both still outsold the Criterion Collection Blu-ray of Mirror. The 4th of July holiday would also have impacted sales.

Another Criterion release, Bringing Up Baby, was at 10th while the 4K release of Howard the Duck was super close behind at 11th.

And that was it in terms of new releases in the top 20 - not a single new movie release is probably why Blu-ray revenue fell again.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: With Criterion not yet doing 4K releases, neither of this week's non 4K exclusive releases were available on 4K. 5 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

The release of three relatively well-known movies on Blu-ray didn't really help Blu-ray revenue much, as overall revenue stayed steady compared to the previous week.

Mortal Kombat was easily the week's top seller, leaving the second-placed new release Wrath of Man in the dust.

Fourth place also belonged to a new release, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.

The 4K release of Snatch was in 8th, while the Criterion version of Deep Cover was in 9th. The remastered version of Almost Famous, available as a standard Blu-ray as well as a 4K release, was 14th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Mortal Kombat" and "Almost Famous" both had 4K editions. 6 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

Another Criterion release got an impressive BD sales share, this time it's "Deep Cover" with 94.87% - again, they should stop concentrating on DVDs and start making some 4K discs!

"Mortal Kombat" got 67.11% (the 4K version had a UHD sales share of 22.42%), while "Wrath of Man" got 58.34%.

"The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run" had to settle for 42.76%, the lower BD sales share not surprising for a title aimed primarily at kids.

Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue continued to drop despite the release of Spiral: From the Book of Saw. The new horror film failed to get top spot, instead, settling for second-place behind Mortal Kombat.

Star Trek: Discovery — Season Three was the next best-selling new release, in 5th place, just ahead of the Blu-ray only release of The Wraith.

The Walking Dead: The Complete Tenth Season was the last of the new releases in the top 10, at 8th.

New to 4K releases G.I. Joe: Retaliation and G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra were 13th and 14th respectively, while the Criterion Collection version of La Piscine was 17th.

Top 10:

Blu-ray sales increased slightly with this week's top seller being A Quiet Place Part II. The Two-Movie collection featuring this new movie and the first "A Quiet Place" movie also sold enough copies to get a third-place finish - this was a Blu-ray only release.

The next new release didn't finish in the top 10, The Dead Zone in 12th.

Midnight in the Switchgrass was in 13th, while American Gods: Season Three was the last of the new releases in the top 20, in 19th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Only "A Quiet Place Part II" was available on 4K. 6 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

This is despite there being only one new release in the top 20 this time last year. Both unit sales and actual revenue were down, which is worrying considering the fact that we're supposed to be coming out of the pandemic right now, compared to being in the middle of it last year.

Top 10:

Disney's Luca was the top-selling title for the week but didn't sell enough copies to make Blu-ray sales rise compared to recent weeks. That may be because the movie was already available for all subscribers of Disney+.

The other two new releases in the top 20 weren't likely to make much of an impact either. The Transformers: The Movie got a SteelBook 4K release and got 4th, while Those Who Wish Me Dead finished 6th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Luca" was available on 4K, along with the 4K only edition of "The Transformers: The Movie". 8 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.
