    Stats:

For the week ending August 14, 2021, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 36.02% vs 63.98%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $10.85 million
DVD sales total spending: $19.27 million

These stats are available from here:

    Media Play News

    Top 10:

A very quiet week that was only $100,000 off being the worst on record since August 2009.

The fact that there was only one new release in the entire top 20, and even that was a DC Animated Film, probably contributed. That release was Batman: The Long Halloween - Part Two, which at least managed to be the top-seller for the week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Batman: The Long Halloween - Part Two" wasn't available on 4K. 8 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. *Batman: The Long Halloween - Part Two
    2. Luca+
    3. A Quiet Place Part II+
    4. Mortal Kombat+
    5. Godzilla vs. Kong+
    6. *The Transformers: The Movie+
    7. *A Quiet Place 2-Movie Collection
    8. Wrath of Man
    9. Those Who Wish Me Dead
    10. Spiral: From the Book of Saw+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

For a particular title, the BD sales share is the percentage of disc packages sold for this title that contained the film's Blu-ray edition (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

"Batman: Long Halloween Part Two" was a Blu-ray exclusive, so it technically would have a BD sales share of 100%.

      Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue improved from last week, but not by much, as new release Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard was the week's best-seller.

Everything else was quite a distance away when it comes to sales, and it was all the way down to 8th for the next new release, A Discovery of Witches: Season 2.

The 35th anniversary 4K re-release of Labyrinth was in 9th.

Outside of the top 10, the Blu-ray only release of Sundown: Vampire in Retreat was in 15th, while the Magical Movie Mode edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was in 19th.

        Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue fell again to the lowest level since August 2009 (that's 2009, not 2019), and only $40,000 off the previous low. This was despite the release of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and Peter Rabbit 2 being this week's new releases.

"The Conjuring 3" managed a second-place finish, while "Peter Rabbit 2" got third.

Their respective multi-movie packs were also in the top 20, The Conjuring 3-Film Collection in 10th, Peter Rabbit Double Feature in 15th.

Despite these two somewhat big releases, Blu-ray revenue continued to slide into unprecedented territory.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both the single movie versions of "The Conjuring 3" and "Peter Rabbit 2" were available on 4K. 8 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

On 4K, "The Conjuring 3" managed to get 11.86%, while "Peter Rabbit 2" struggled on 4K with only a 2% Ultra HD Blu-ray sales share.

          Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue increased slightly off of the 6 new releases in the top 20.

The best-selling of the new releases was Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, which was also the top-selling new release on Blu-ray.

The next new release was In the Heights in 4th place, with Spirit Untamed not too far behind in 5th place.

The limited edition of Dune was in 11th, along with the Blu-ray re-release of Coraline in 13th.

The final new title in the top 20 was 12 Mighty Orphans in 19th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms", "In the Heights" and "Dune" all came with 4K editions. 9 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

Other than the releases that were available only on Blu-ray/4K, "In the Heights" had the best BD sales share, with 61.31%. "Spirit Untamed" had to settle for 43.29% (which isn't so bad, considering it's a kids movie). "12 Mighty Orphans" got 30.90%.

On 4K, "Dune" limited edition got a UHD sales share of 68.85% (so most people preferred the 4K edition), "Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms" got 31.50%, and "In the Heights" got 19.37%, which is more typical of your "also available on DVD" type releases.

            Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue and market share all improved slightly compared to the previous week, as Zack Snyder’s Justice League made its disc debut at the top of the Blu-ray sales charts. The 4K trilogy box set, which features this movie as well as "Man of Steel" and "Batman v Superman", was also in the top 20, at 14th.

A couple of 4K re-releases were also in the top 20, including The Thing in 3rd, Rear Window in 16th and Vertigo in 17th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Zack Snyder’s Justice League" was available on 4K, and the rest were all 4K only releases. 9 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
            1. Zack Snyder’s Justice League+
            2. Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard+
            3. *The Thing+

As "Zack Snyder’s Justice League" was the week's only non 4K-only release, it was the only one with a BD sales share value, which was a high 74.56%. The 4K edition of this director's cut also did well, with a 4K UHD sales share of 38.09%. To put these numbers into perspective, nearly three-quarters of buyers chose to but the 4K or Blu-ray edition over the DVD-only edition, and more than half of these buyers chose the 4K edition over the standard Blu-ray one - this means the 4K edition of this release was actually the most popular version (4K: 38.09%; Blu-ray: 36.47%; DVD: 25.44%).

For the week ending September 18, 2021, here are the stats:

              Percentage of revenue (MPN):
              Blu-ray vs DVD: 43.01% vs 56.99%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $16.53 million

              Top 10:

The release of the A-list Black Widow helped Blu-ray revenue to rise and Blu-ray market share to rise above 40% for the first time in a long time.

It was the clear top-seller for the week, outselling the number two "Zack Snyder’s Justice League" by more than a 4-to-1 margin. Third place was occupied by the next new release, The Boss Baby: Family Business.

The 4K release of The Shawshank Redemption was 5th, while outside of the top 20, Out of Death was in 19th.

But it was "Black Widow" that probably had the most impact on Blu-ray sales this wee.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both "Black Widow" and "The Boss Baby: Family Business" were made available on 4K. Every single title in the top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
              1. Black Widow+

              10. *Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms+

"Black Widow" managed a BD sales share of 70.68%, with a 4K sales share of 27.39%. "The Boss Baby: Family Business" was further behind with 50.49%, and a much lower 4.36% on 4K.

"Out of Death" managed 41.97% on Blu-ray.

                Top 10:

What is this? Two big releases in a row? Last week was "Black Widow", and this week we have just as big a release in the form of F9: The Fast Saga. It sold more than twice as many copies as "Black Widow" for this week.

Not as big as "F9", but still quite big, was Disney's Cruella, just missing out on a second-place finish.

There were two more new releases in the top 10, both 4K re-releases. A Clockwork Orange was more popular than Unbreakable, in 6th and 8th places respectively.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: So every one of this week's new releases was either a 4K exclusives or was made available on 4K. Every single title in the top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                1. F9: The Fast Saga+
                2. Black Widow+
                3. Cruella+
                4. Zack Snyder’s Justice League+
                5. The Boss Baby: Family Business+
                6. *A Clockwork Orange+
                7. Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard+
                8. *Unbreakable+
                9. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It+
                10. Godzilla vs. Kong+

"Cruella" beat out "F9: The Fast Saga" in terms of BD sales share, 74.65% versus 58.71%. On 4K, it was reversed, with "F9" with a 4K sales share of 16.17% ahead of "Cruella" at 15.56%.

                  Top 10:

Blu-ray sales dropped back down due to the small number of new releases in the top 20 this week, but despite this, both Blu-ray and DVD sales recorded rises compared to the same week last year. That was because a year ago was one of the low points for home video releases, right in the middle of the pandemic and with almost no new releases in sight.

The Forever Purge was the only major new release this week in the top 20, and it only managed to sell enough copies to get a fourth-place finish.

The only other new release in the top 10 was The Transformers: The Movie. A SteelBook version was released almost two months ago, but this is the first time the plain vanilla Blu-ray and 4K versions were made available to buy.

The first of many Halloween inspired titles made it into the top 10 this week, perennial favourite "Hocus Pocus". Expect more of these in the coming weeks.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both new releases were released on 4K. 9 titles out of the top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                  1. F9: The Fast Saga+

                  9. *The Transformers: The Movie+
                  10. Hocus Pocus

                    Top 10:

Blu-ray sales stayed steady compared to last week. There were numerous new releases in the top 10, but the most popular one was Space Jam: A New Legacy. But it was only popular enough to earn a 4th place finish. Space Jam 2-Film Collection also got in to the top 10, at 16th.

The Best Buy exclusive 4K SteelBook release of American Psycho was the next new release, in 5th.

Then we have a bunch of 4K Halloween (the franchise) releases by Shout Factory, the most popular of which was for the 1978 original film, Halloween. Halloween III: Season of the Witch was in 17th, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers in 18th, Halloween II in 19th, and Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers in 20th.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions finished in 9th place.

                      Top 10:

The second half of 2021's third major blockbuster release, Free Guy, helped Blu-ray revenue rise and for Blu-ray weekly market share to rise above 40%.

In third place was the next new release, The Green Knight, with the 4K release of Inglourious Basterds being the other new release in the top 10, at 7th.

Outside of the top 10, the 4K release of Carlito’s Way was 16th, while the impressive Columbia Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection Vol. 2 was in 17th place.

But it was mostly "Free Guy" (outsold the second-placed "F9: The Fast Saga" by almost a 3-to-1 margin) that helped to boost this week's Blu-ray stats.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All of this week's new releases in the top 20 were either 4K only releases or were made available on the format. All of the titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

                      9. The Boss Baby: Family Business+

So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

"The Green Knight" beat "Free Guy" in terms of BD sales share, with the former on an impressive 77.88% and the latter with (a still decent) 66.83%. On 4K, it was also a similar story, with "The Green Knight" getting a UHD sales share of 32.08% and "Free Guy" with 25.44%.

To put this into easier to understand terms, almost 4 out of 5 sold copies of "The Green Knight" were the 4K or Blu-ray editions, 1 in 3 being the 4K edition. 1 in 4 sold copies of "Free Guy" was the 4K edition.

Despite this week's (relatively) good results, everything was still down compared to the same week last year. But this is easily explained by the fact that the huge Amazon Prime Day sale happened this time last year (whereas this year's even occurred in June).

Blu-ray sales increased by $8.54m (don 33.7%), with unit sales down 29.4%.

DVD sales decreased by $5.04m (down 19.5%), with unit sales down 21.1%.

This meant $13.57 million less in combined revenue for the week.

                        Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue fell slightly and was still at a recent high thanks to Free Guy still selling well on Blu-ray. So much so that the week's top-selling new release, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins had to settle for second place.

The third and fourth spots were also new releases. Injustice was in third while the much-maligned Old had to settle for a fourth-place finish.

                        The Protégé was in 6th.

Outside of the top 10, the SteelBook version of the Indiana Jones 4-Movie Collection finished in 11th, and Superman & Lois: The Complete First Season was in 20th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Everything except for "Superman & Lois: The Complete First Season" were all made available on 4K UHD. All of the titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                        1. Free Guy+
                        2. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins+

"The Protégé" actually had the best BD sales share out of this week's (non Blu-ray exclusive) new releases in the top 20, with a BD sales share of 62.43%.

To be fair, "Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins" wasn't too far behind, with 61.18%.

"Old" got 56.07%, while "Superman & Lois: The Complete First Season" managed 43.52%.

On 4K, "Injustice" got 23.90%, "Old" did well with 19.66%, "The Protégé" got 18.60% and "Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins" got 17.53%.

                          Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue rose slightly and Blu-ray weekly market share remained above 40% for another week, thanks to the release of another A-list title in the form of The Suicide Squad. It was the standout seller for the week, easily outselling everything.

In a distant fourth place was Don’t Breathe 2, and it was also the only other new release the top 10.

Stillwater finished just outside of the top 10 in 11th, while there was room for just one more new release in the top 20, Superman: The Complete Animated Series (25th Anniversary Collector's Edition) in 14th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both "The Suicide Squad" and "Don't Breathe 2" were made available on 4K. All of the titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

Blu-ray revenue and market share both fell slightly compared to recent weeks, as the week wasn't filled with top-tiered new releases.

The best-selling new release was Paw Patrol: The Movie, coming in at 3rd.

The only other new release in the top 20 was Pig in 11th.

The Crown: The Complete Fourth Season didn't even get into the Blu-ray top 20, but it was 20th on the combined Blu-ray and DVD chart.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Neither of this week's two new releases was made available on 4K. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

                              Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVDs sales were up off the backs of an Amazon sale that took place during the reporting week, which also explains the elevation of several older titles back into the top 10.

Many 4K titles dropped to below $10 during the sale, including this week's top-seller Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

There were two new releases in the top 10 though, but they were way down the chart. Respect was 16th, while Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Complete Series in 20th place.

This week's top-seller, "Zack Snyder’s Justice League", managed a 4K sales share of 60.17%, which makes it quite clear which version people preferred to buy.

                                Top 10:

Some pre-Black Friday deals and one big new release helped Blu-ray revenue stay above the $20 million mark.

That big release was Jungle Cruise, the top-seller this week, and some critics might argue the release would have been bigger if the movie hadn't already made its way to Disney+ on Disney+ Day (November 12). Still, this is the new normal when it comes to physical media releases, as studios find that there is better value in releasing content on their own streaming platforms than having an exclusive sell-through window.

Universal has Peacock as their streaming platform, but they've decided to take a more cautious approach when it comes to release windows, at least as far as Candyman is concerned. Despite this, "Candyman" was only able to finish in 10th place.

That was pretty much the only new releases in the top 20, the rest were filled with recent discounts (eg. "Nobody" and "The Green Knight" 4K editions both discounted to $9.99 from their regular ~$20-25) as we build up to Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both "Jungle Cruise" and "Candyman" were made available on 4K. All 10 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                                1. Jungle Cruise+
                                2. F9: The Fast Saga+
                                3. Zack Snyder’s Justice League+
                                4. Godzilla vs. Kong+
                                5. The Green Knight+
                                6. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins+
                                7. Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard+
                                8. A Quiet Place Part II+
                                9. Mortal Kombat+
                                10. Candyman+

"Candyman" actually managed to beat "Jungle Cruise" in terms of BD sales share, 65.16% versus 54.63%. Might have something to do with the fact that one was already available for "free" on a 4K streaming platform, while the other wasn't.

On 4K, "Candyman" was ahead of "Jungle Cruise" as well, 24.99% versus 16.10%.

                                Year on Year Comparison

The stats for the week ending November 21, 2020 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) have been made and are shown below.

                                Blu-ray: $25.44 million
                                DVD: $34.06 million
It was the battle of straight-to-Disney+ (via Premier Access) releases, last year's "Mulan" (the first title to be released this way) vs this year's "Jungle Cruise". The winner? "Mulan", it appears.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $2.80m (down 11.0%), with unit sales down 17.8%.

DVD sales decreased by $5.96m (down 17.5%), with unit sales down 26.8%.

This meant $8.76 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share increased from 42.76% to 44.62%
