    Top 10:

Black Friday pre-sales and declining interest in physical media all contributed to a lacklustre Black Friday sales event, where Blu-ray sales were down 27% compared to last year's sales event.

As usual for Black Friday, there were no new releases in the top 20. Instead, it was dominated by titles that were on sale during the event (such as "Wonder Woman 1984", "1917"), along with recent best-sellers "F9: The Fast Saga", "Jungle Cruise"), and a sprinkle of Christmas favourites ("The Grinch", "Elf").

So just how bad was BF2021? Blu-ray sales were down 27.1% as mentioned earlier, but that's on top of the 54.5% decline that we saw last year. At that time, we attributed much of the decline to the pandemic and the lack of new releases. And while things are still not back to 100% on this front, the number of big releases have improved, and yet, revenue was still down. This suggests COVID-19 isn't to blame for everything and that declining demand for physical media may be at play, although the pandemic is still a big factor indirectly, due to many releases being fast-tracked to streaming. DVD sales were down too, but that was always to be expected.

Compared to six years ago, the peak of Black Friday Blu-ray sales, revenue was down a massive $79.98 million, or 75.3%!

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All 10 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. F9: The Fast Saga+
    2. Jungle Cruise+
    3. Godzilla vs. Kong+
    4. Wonder Woman 1984+
    5. The Grinch+
    6. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins+
    7. Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard+
    8. Zack Snyder’s Justice League+
    9. Free Guy+
    10. Mortal Kombat+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

For a particular title, the BD sales share is the percentage of disc packages sold for this title that contained the film's Blu-ray edition (including combos, and Ultra HD editions). So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

In terms of BD sales share, "Zack Snyder’s Justice League" had the best set of results, 89.87%. While it was also top for 4K sales share, at 43.61%, followed by "Mortal Kombat" at 32.68%.

As mentioned earlier, and confirmed here in clear detail, everything was down compared to the last Black Friday sales, which was already one of the worst on record. Disappointing.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $9.77m (down 27.1%), with unit sales down 34.3%.

DVD sales decreased by $6.69m (down 18.0%), with unit sales down 29.9%.

This meant $16.46 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 49.23% to 46.29%

      Top 10:

Cyber Monday 2021 is as much a fizzle as Black Friday 2021, with Blu-ray sales down 27% on already low numbers from last year.

This is despite the big sales event being coupled with a fairly big release in the form of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which was easily the top-selling title for the week.

Due to the sales event and the release of a big title, other releases stayed away from the week, which isn't unusual.

What was unusual was the 27% drop in Blu-ray sales compared to BF2020, which was already almost 29% down on 2019. That's down a total of 48%, or $23 million, compared to the last pre-pandemic Cyber Monday. As mentioned in our Black Friday analysis, not all of this can be written off as pandemic related. The increased adoption of streaming services during the pandemic and the fast-tracked release of titles like "Shang-Chi" on streaming has further diminished the role of physical media for home entertainment. Perhaps when release windows return back to normal (or whatever the new normal is), physical media with its early release date will make a small comeback. But it's unlikely to return to pre-pandemic levels. This is the new normal.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Shang-Chi" was made available on 4K. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

      7. The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy+
      8. Black Widow+

        Top 10:

Despite a couple of good releases in the top 20, and also the beginning of the holiday shopping period, Blu-ray revenue failed to overcome the $20 million barrier yet again. Blu-ray sales were down 27% compared to the same week last year.

Ron's Gone Wrong was the best-selling of all the new releases, coming in third.

Rick and Morty: Season 5 was next on the chart, with Cry Macho in 6th.

The 4K release of Who Framed Roger Rabbit was in 7th, while outside the top 10, the 4K release of Krampus was 12th.

Dear Evan Hansen had to settle for a 14th place finish.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Ron’s Gone Wrong" and "Cry Macho" were both made available on 4K. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Of this week's non Blu-ray/4K exclusives, "Rick and Morty: Season 5" had the best BD sales share, with 61.96%.

"Ron's Gone Wrong" wasn't too far behind with 60.57%. "Dear Evan Hansen" got 47.76%, but "Cry Macho" didn't do too well with only 40.57%.

On 4K, "Ron's Gone Wrong" got a 4K sales share of 10.52%, but "Cry Macho" had to settle for 5.26%.

          Top 10:

Finally, some semblance of the holiday sales period with Blu-ray weekly revenue nearly going above $30 million, and DVD revenue getting above $40 million since this time last year. Blu-ray weekly market share also rose above 40%.

While these sales are mostly about older releases, there were a couple of new releases this week as well, including the top-seller for the week, Venom: Let There Be Carnage. It was by far the best-selling title of the week, and the Venom 2-Movie Collection also ranked high, in 5th.

The Last Duel finished in 10th place while the 4K and 4K SteelBook release of The Wolf of Wall Street was in 16th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" was available in 4K, but not the 2-movie collection, while "The Last Duel" was also a 4K release. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

Still an "all red" week where all metrics were down compared to the same week last year, but it wasn't by much to be honest, so we'll call it a draw.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $1.51m (down 4.9%), with unit sales down 15.5%.

            Top 10:

We're finally seeing some holiday action, and for the first time in a while, results are better than what they were last year. Although part of this could be explained by this year's reporting week having an extra pre-Christmas sales day than last year's same week.

But it was probably mainly due to one of this year's biggest movies arriving on Blu-ray (and one that wasn't available on subscription streaming beforehand), No Time to Die.

It was one of three new releases in the top 20, the next one being the Blu-ray exclusive Demon Slayer: Mugen Train in 4th, and the final one being The Many Saints of Newark in 18th.

A title like "The Many Saints of Newark" probably would have done better than 18th had it not been available on subscription streaming (HBO Max, to be exact), so studios are definitely cannibalizing their home video revenue in order to promote their streaming platforms - they must feel these platforms are the future of home video, and they're probably right.

Blu-ray sales were up 15% compared to the same week last year, and even DVD sales improved. Another interesting phenomenon is the supply chain issues causing movies to be less discounted at the big retailers. This may be driving revenue up artificially. If this were the case, unit sales would be static or in decline while revenue was up, which is exactly the situation this week for Blu-ray and DVD sales (see below). Average disc cost for Blu-ray rose from $18.56 this time last year to $21.21 this year. Average DVD prices were up 11% as well.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both "No Time to Die" and "The Many Saints of Newark" were made available on 4K. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

"No Time to Die" was very popular on Blu-ray, receiving a BD sales share of 73.52% - this means only 26.48% opted for the DVD version of the film. It also did well on 4K Blu-ray, with 27.24% opting for the 4K edition (so the breakdown goes 26.48% DVD, 27.24% 4K Blu-ray, and 46.28% opting for the standard Blu-ray version).

"The Many Saints of Newark" was further behind with a BD sales share of 59.81% and a 4K sales share of 11.64%.

              Stats:

For the week ending January 1, 2022, here are the stats:

              Percentage of revenue (MPN):
              Blu-ray vs DVD: 43.41% vs 56.59%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $17.16 million
DVD sales total spending: $22.37 million

              Top 10:

The start of the new year is here, and as expected, a big dropoff in sales has occurred as does happen this time of the year. The trend is also towards not having many new releases at this time, and the first week of 2022 did not deviate from this.

The sole new release in the top 20 was The French Dispatch, and it only came 5th in any case, so hardly a best-seller. It also wasn't made available on 4K.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: 6 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
              1. No Time to Die+
              2. Venom: Let There Be Carnage+
              3. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings+
              4. *Demon Slayer: Mugen Train
              5. The French Dispatch
              6. Spider-Man: Far From Home+
              7. Spider-Man: Homecoming & Far From Home
              8. *Venom 2-Movie Collection
              9. F9: The Fast Saga+
              10. The Suicide Squad+

                Top 10:

A combination of a quiet release schedule and continued weakness in physical media sales saw Blu-ray revenue drop to lows not seen since September of last year.

The only new release in the top 20 was Antlers, and it only came in 4th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Antlers" wasn't available on 4K. 6 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                1. No Time to Die+
                2. Venom: Let There Be Carnage+
                3. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings+
                4. Antlers
                5. *Demon Slayer: Mugen Train
                6. Spider-Man: Far From Home+
                7. The French Dispatch
                8. Spider-Man: Homecoming & Far From Home
                9. The Last Duel+
                10. Jungle Cruise+

"Antlers" had a BD sales share of 57.31%.

                  Top 10:

The release of Dune: Part 1 didn't really help Blu-ray sales return to highs enjoyed in December, but Blu-ray revenue did rise compared to the last week.

It easily outsold the second-placed Halloween Kills by more than a 2-to-1 margin.

The only other new release in the top 20 was Spencer in 11th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Both "Dune" and "Halloween Kills" were made available on 4K. 7 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

"Dune" managed a BD sales share of 81.36%, which is quite impressive, with an equally impressive 4K sales share of 38.98%. It was even made available on 3D, but only 2.48% of total disc sales for "Dune" were on this legacy format.

"Halloween Kills" managed a BD sales share of 66.95%, with a 4K sales share of 27.43%.

"Spencer" got a BD sales share of 51.20%.

                    Top 10:

Last Night in Soho was the week's top-selling new release, coming in at 3rd, way behind "Dune" and somewhat behind "Halloween Kills".

The Addams Family 2 was the next new release, in 5th place.

The last of the new releases in the top 10 was the Blu-ray exclusive release Candyman 3: Day of the Dead, in 8th.

Outside of the top 10, the Best Buy exclusive 4K release of Requiem for a Dream was in 14th, Titane was in 15th, and the 4K edition of Akira was in 16th.

Despite these new releases, Blu-ray revenue remained near historical lows.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K only releases, only "Last Night in Soho" was made available on 4K. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

"Titane" failed to make the BD sales share top 20.

On 4K, "Last Night in Soho" again did very well, with a 4K sales share of 35.28%.

                      Top 10:

A very quiet week in terms of releases saw Blu-ray revenue fall to its lowest level since February 1, 2009!

The only new release was the Best Buy exclusive 4K SteelBook version of The Punisher, coming into the chart at 5th place.

While this time of the year always produces poor results, the fact that Blu-ray sales are lower than this time last year, when COVID cases and deaths peaked in the US for the year, suggests a worrying trend. Either the pandemic is still far from over and people are still hesitant to spend, or it shows that the demise of physical media seems to have been hastened by the pandemic and the further shift towards streaming. Or maybe a bit of both.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K only release of the "The Punisher", there were no other new releases in the top 10. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The single new release in the top 20 was a Blu-ray/4K only release, so market share does not apply (well, technically, it's 100% for Blu-ray and 4K by the metrics we use, whereas Media Play News includes sales of all previous edition of the film when calculating the market share, which puts "The Punisher" at 91.14%).

                        Stats:

For the week ending February 5, 2022, here are the stats:

                        Percentage of revenue (MPN):
                        Blu-ray vs DVD: 42.81% vs 57.19%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $14.40 million
DVD sales total spending: $19.24 million

                        Media Play News

                        Top 10:

Thankfully, Blu-ray revenue moved off of last week's historical lows, mostly due to the release of a single movie. That movie was Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which outsold the recent number one, "Dune: Part 1", by almost a 7-to-1 margin.

The latest "Ghostbusters" film was such a big release, that even the three-movie collection featuring this latest movie (plus the original two Ghostbusters movies - the 2016 film be damned), managed to get a second-place finish.

The only other new release in the top 20 was Clifford the Big Red Dog, and it did well enough to get a 4th place finish, just behind "Dune".

These new releases helped Blu-ray revenue rise above the recent low, and also helped Blu-ray market share get above 40% again.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" was made available on 4K, as was the three-movie collection (a 4K Ultimate Collection gift set), but "Clifford the Big Red Dog" was a standard Blu-ray only affair. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                        1. Ghostbusters: Afterlife+
                        2. Ghostbusters 3-Movie Collection+

"Ghostbusters 3-Movie Collection" had the best BD sales share out of this week's new releases, with a BD sales share of 70.26%.

Just the latest movie itself, "Ghostbusters: Afterlife", had a BD sales share of 65.10%. "Clifford the Big Red Dog" only managed 29%.

On 4K, the "Ghostbusters 3-Movie Collection" managed 22.79%, with "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" getting 18.65%.

A half-dozen new releases were in the top 10 this week, and Blu-ray revenue did continue to recover from recent lows.

The best-selling of these new releases, and this week's top-seller, was Encanto. Despite being available on Disney+ for a while now, the animated hit has struck a chord with viewers and it seems the 4K/Blu-ray/DVD release was being embraced too.

Further down in third place was another new release: Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City.

Other new releases include Catwoman: Hunted in 6th, King Richard in 10th, the Best Buy 4K SteelBook exclusive of La La Land in 11th, and finally in 14th, the 4K release of the Spider-Man Trilogy.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All of the week's new releases were available on 4K, or were 4K exclusives. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

There was only one new release in the top 10, but while it was a relatively big release, it failed to help lift Blu-ray revenue. Eternals easily outsold all the other titles in the top 20.

Despite no less than 8 new releases in the top 20, Blu-ray revenue remained largely unchanged from the previous week.

The King’s Man and its various editions were the best-selling new Blu-ray release for the week, although it only managed a second-place finish on the Blu-ray chart, behind "Eternals". The Best Buy exclusive The Kingsman Collection, featuring all 3 movies in the franchise, also managed to get into the top 20, in 17th.

American Underdog was in 4th, with House of Gucci in 6th. The 355 debuts in 9th.

                                Top 10:

A very quiet week, new release wise, meant that Blu-ray revenue almost fell to decade lows, while Blu-ray weekly market share took a tumble as well (recording its lowest result since 2017).

Oscar Best Picture nominee Belfast was the best-selling new release, but it only managed to rank 11th.

The only other new release was the Blu-ray only releaseThe Batman: The Complete Series, in 20th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Neither of these new releases was made available on 4K. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
                                1. Encanto+
                                2. Eternals+
                                3. Ghostbusters: Afterlife+
                                4. The King’s Man+
                                5. American Underdog+
                                6. Dune: Part 1+
                                7. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City+
                                8. No Time to Die+
                                9. House of Gucci
                                10. The 355

"Belfast" only managed a BD sales share of 32.78%, well below the 50%+ you'd expect these days.

                                Year on Year Comparison

The stats for the week ending March 6, 2021 are as follows. Some small adjustments to the data posted last year (based on more recent updates) have been made and are shown below.

An "all red" week is where every statistic below is in the "red" due to it being lower than for the same week last year. This week was another one. This week last year, we had the new releases "Monster Hunter" and "Fatale". So not exactly a big week in terms of new releases, but this year's was much worse.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $3.83m (down 26.4%), with unit sales down 34.9%.

DVD sales decreased by $4.30m (down 17.7%), with unit sales down 27.2%.

This meant $8.13 million less in combined revenue for the week.

Blu-ray's market share decreased from 37.40% to 34.83%
