    Stats:

For the week ending October 22, 2022, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 43.69% vs 56.31%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $11.38 million
DVD sales total spending: $14.67 million

These stats are available from here:

    Media Play News

    Top 10:

Bullet Train was the week's top-seller, but despite there being 8 other new releases in the top 20, Blu-ray revenue actually dropped compared to the previous week.

Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons was the next new release in the top 10, coming in at 3rd.

Shout Factor's 4K release of The Return of the Living Dead was 5th.

Bodies Bodies Bodies was 7th, and the last of the new releases in the top 10.

The Best Buy exclusive 4K edition of Punisher: War Zone was 11th, followed by Fall in 13th.

Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank was 14th, the SteelBook Blu-ray edition of The Ring was 15th, and finally, Orphan: First Kill was 16th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Bullet Train", "Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons", and "Bodies Bodies Bodies", all had 4K editions, although the latter only had a Best Buy exclusive 4K edition. 9 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Bullet Train+
    2. Thor: Love and Thunder+
    3. *Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons+
    4. Jurassic World Dominion+
    5. *The Return of the Living Dead+
    6. Beast
    7. Bodies Bodies Bodies+
    8. DC League of Super-Pets+
    9. Minions: The Rise of Gru+
    10. Elvis+

Blu-ray, Ultra HD Blu-ray Sales Share:

The BD sales share is the percentage of disc packages sold for that contained the titles's Blu-ray edition (including combos, and Ultra HD editions) for a particular title. So a BD sales share of 60% indicates that 60% of disc packages sold for this particular film contained the Blu-ray edition for this film, and so anything over 50% means that the Blu-ray version of the film was more popular than the DVD version.

Excluding the Blu-ray/4K exclusives, "Bodies Bodies Bodies" actually had the highest BD sales share with a BD sales share of 74.25%. "Bullet Train" managed 68.05%, just ahead of "Orphan: First Kill" with 66.56%.

"Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank" got 40%, with "Fall" only managing 36%.

On 4K, "Bullet Train" was the best of the new releases, with a 4K sales share of 28.49%. Despite the 4K version only being a Best Buy exclusive, "Bodies Bodies Bodies" still managed a 4K sales share of 21.62%.

"Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons" had a 4K sales share of 20.43%.

    Top 10:

A slew of new releases in the top 10 helped Blu-ray revenue rise to recent highs.

The actual highest-ranked new release was Beast, even though it only came 5th.

The Criterion release of Lost Highway was the next new release, in 8th place. Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind in 10th rounded off the top 10.

Outside of the top 10, the 4K releases of the individual "Godfather" movies helped The Godfather. And finally, in 19th, was the Criterion release of the classic movie Arsenic and Old Lace./\

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Lost Highway" and "Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind", all had 4K editions. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

"Beast" managed a BD sales share of 44%, and believe it or not, it was the only new release that had a relevant BD sales rank as the rest were all available on Blu-ray/4K only.

On 4K, "Lost Highway" got a 4K sales share of 79.92%, while "Mortal Kombat Legends: Snow Blind" got 37.25%.

For the week ending October 8, 2022, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 40.65% vs 59.35%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $10.70 million
DVD sales total spending: $15.62 million

These stats are available from here:

    Top 10:

Blu-ray and DVD revenue remained steady as DC League of Super-Pets was the best-selling new release for the week - but it only came second, behind "Thor: Love and Thunder".

The 4K SteelBook release of Fright Night was 3rd, and the Shout Factory 4K releases of Army of Darkness was 4th.

Star Trek: Picard - Season Two was 6th.

More 4K releases were in the top 20, Scream 2 was 7th and Bram Stoker’s Dracula was 11th, and The Halloween 3-Movie (1995-2002) 4K Collection was 13th.

Despite the numerous releases, and the number of 4K releases, Blu-ray revenue was largely flat - pre-pandemic, this wouldn't have been the case.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "DC League of Super-Pets" had a 4K edition, "Star Trek: Picard — Season Two" did not. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Thor: Love and Thunder+
    2. DC League of Super-Pets+
    3. *Fright Night+
    4. *Army of Darkness+
    5. Jurassic World Dominion+
    6. Star Trek: Picard - Season Two
    7. *Scream 2+
    8. Minions: The Rise of Gru+
    9. Elvis+
    10. The Munsters

"Star Trek: Picard — Season Two" managed a BD sales share of 51.56%, which was just ahead of "DC League of Super-Pets", which managed 50.96%.

The only release this week that had simultaneous 4K and standard Blu-ray versions was "DC League of Super-Pets", and so it was the only one that had a 4K sales share - 9.12%.

    Blu-ray vs DVD: 41.82% vs 58.18%

DVD sales total spending: $15.18 million

    Top 10:

The box office smash Thor: Love and Thunder was the top-seller for the week, but despite the might and magic of Marvel, Blu-ray weekly revenue was actually down compared to the previous week. With most Disney/Marvel movies being released on Disney+ prior to their home video debut, it has really taken a huge bite out of disc sales of these movies. Take the previous Thor movie, "Thor: Ragnarok" - when it was released, Blu-ray revenue rose from the then average of around $25 million per week to more than $57 million. A far cry from the less than $11 million for the new Thor movie, despite their box office receipts not being hugely different. The streaming disruption is here.

There were three other new releases in the top 20, with The Munsters was the best-selling of which, coming in second (a distant second to "Thor: Love and Thunder").

The rest of the two were 4K only releases: I Know What You Did Last Summer in 10th and Evil Dead in 11th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "Thor: Love and Thunder" had a 4K edition, "The Munsters" did not. 7 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Thor: Love and Thunder+
    2. The Munsters
    3. Jurassic World Dominion+
    4. Elvis+
    5. Minions: The Rise of Gru+
    6. Spider-Man: No Way Home+

    8. Lightyear+
    9. Hocus Pocus
    10. *I Know What You Did Last Summer+

"Thor: Love and Thunder" managed a BD sales share of 66.30%, while "The Munsters" got 55.87%.

On 4K, "Thor" did well again with a massive 31.40% 4K sales share - that means a third of of buyers chose the 4K edition over the standard Blu-ray or DVD editions.

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 41.84% vs 58.16%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $11.15 million
DVD sales total spending: $15.50 million

    Top 10:

Blu-ray revenue hovered around the $11 million mark again, as we have a week without any compelling new releases yet again.

Outlander: Season Six was the best-selling new release, coming in at 4th. It was joined in the top 10 by the 4K release of The Lost Boys in 6th and Poltergeist in 8th.

Outside of the top 10, we have Dragon Ball Super: The Complete Series in 18th and Wrong Place in 19th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Apart from the 4K exclusive releases, neither "Outlander" nor "Dragon Ball Super: The Complete Series" or "Wrong Place" were made available on 4K. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):

"Outlander: Season Six" managed a BD sales share of 45.20%. Due to the pandemic and everything, we had to go back two years to when season 5 was released - that particular release managed a BD sales share of 43% - so a slight improvement this year.

"Wrong Place" only got a BD sales share of 15.30%.

Again, this week was up against a relatively big week this time last year, when "F9: The Fast Saga" was released on home video. This partially explains why everything is down compared to a year ago, but there seems more to it than that - physical media just isn't what people are after anymore.

Blu-ray sales decreased by $6.72m (down 37.6%), with unit sales down 40.7%.

DVD sales decreased by $6.52m (down 29.6%), with unit sales down 30.2%.

    Top 10:

Elvis was the best-selling new release for the week, and it was also the overall top-seller.

But despite this relatively successful movie (box office wise), and six other new releases in the top 20, Blu-ray revenue wasn't much higher than compared to the previous week, which has been fairly subdued in recent weeks.

The other new releases were Where the Crawdads Sing in third place, and Lightyear in fourth. The Pixar animated movie would normally be a big seller on Blu-ray, but ever since Disney started releasing their movies on Disney+ prior to their home release, sales haven't reached the peaks experienced in earlier years (the fact that "Lightyear" performed weakly at the box office was also another reason, although this doesn't always preclude a good run on Blu-ray).

The rest of the new releases were all 4K re-issues. Real Genius was 6th, just ahead of The Fog and its many Shout Factory exclusive editions in 8th.

Friday the 13th was 15th, just ahead of Platoon in 16th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Apart from the 4K exclusive releases, "Elvis" was made available on 4K. 7 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

"Lightyear" managed a respectable Blu-ray sales share of 58.35%, which was well ahead of the 49.07% earned by "Elvis".

On 4K, "Lightyear" was again ahead of "Elvis", with a 4K sales share of 18.50% versus 11.76% (a disappointing figure given the visual spectacle of a movie).

"Minions: The Rise of Gru" only recorded a 4K sales share of 8.20%, which again is reasonable considering it's a kid's title.

This time last year saw the much bigger movie "Black Widow" being released for the first time on the disc formats, and as a result for this week, Blu-ray revenue was down 33.3% compared to that week. This is why we have an "all red" week once more (where every metric below is in the "red" compared to the same week last year).

Blu-ray sales decreased by $5.53m (down 33.3%), with unit sales down 34.7%.

    Top 10:

** Please note, there appears to be an error with this week's DVD stats posted by Media Play News, in that they are exactly the same as last week's. We are investigating. **

Blu-ray revenue recovered (slightly) from last week's historical lows as Minions: The Rise of Gru was the best-selling title of the week.

Other new releases this week include Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition, which along with the 6-movie 4K collection, was also issued with the five other movies in the TOS movie franchise. As such, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan were also in the top 10, in 9th, 15th and 16th respectively.

The 4K Best Buy exclusive version of 3:10 to Yuma was also in the top 20, at 11th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All of this week's previously mentioned new releases (in the top 20) were available on 4K. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Minions: The Rise of Gru+

The only new release that actually had a DVD-only edition, and therefore a BD sales share, was "Minions: The Rise of Gru", and it managed a BD sales share of 55.76%. Respectable for a kid's title.

For 4K sales share, most Trekkies/Trekkers opted for the 4K edition when a couple of the new releases this week also had Blu-ray editions, notably "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" with a 4K share of 96.31%, "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" with a 4K share of 95.38%, and "Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition" with 78.50%.

"Minions: The Rise of Gru" only recorded a 4K sales share of 8.20%, which again is reasonable considering it's a kid's title.

    Stats:

For the week ending September 3, 2022, here are the stats:

    Percentage of revenue (MPN):
    Blu-ray vs DVD: 38.99% vs 61.01%

Blu-ray sales total spending: $9.81 million
DVD sales total spending: $15.35 million

These stats are available from here:

    Top 10:

The week ending September 3, 2022 has the unenviable record of the lowest weekly Blu-ray results since September 21, 2008. That's not a type, that's 2008, not 2018, and that's almost back to when we started keeping track of Blu-ray revenue.

The bad results may have something to do with the Labor Day long weekend and a total lack of compelling new releases in the top 10. The only new release in the top 10 was 1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story, in second place.

We asked last week if "The Lord of the Rings" discs will make a comeback this week due to the release of Amazon's "Rings of Power" series, and yes, it did, coming in at 6th.

Outside of the top 10, the Best Buy exclusive 4K SteelBook edition of Warrior was 11th, while the 4K collector's edition of Belle was 14th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story" wasn't made available on 4K. 7 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

The complete top 10 chart is below (new releases in bold, Blu-ray exclusives are denoted by *, UHD releases denoted by +):
    1. Jurassic World Dominion+
    2. 1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story
    3. My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission
    4. Sonic the Hedgehog 2+
    5. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness+
    6. The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy+
    7. The Black Phone
    8. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore+
    9. Jurassic World: Ultimate Collection+
    10. Top Gun+

"1883: A Yellowstone Origin Story" only managed a BD sales share of 25%.

It's worth noting that "The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy" had a 4K UHD sales share of 42.88%, so lots of people decided to go straight to the 4K edition to get their LOTR fix.

A very quiet week in which My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission was the sole new release in the top 20.

The only other note of interest was "Game of Thrones: The Complete Series" jumping back into 8th (was 95th last week) on the backs of the debut of "House of the Dragon". I wonder if "The Lord of the Rings" discs will make a comeback next week ...

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: "My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission" wasn't made available on 4K. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

As "My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission" was a Blu-ray only release, it does not have a BD sales share (or rather, it's at 100%). On 4K, "Game of Thrones: The Complete Series" had the best 4K sales share, with 72.89% of buyers this week opting for the 4K edition.

A big release this week helped Blu-ray revenue and market share rise. Jurassic World Dominion outsold everything else quite easily. The obligatory multi-movie collection (they release one of these after every new movie it seems ... triple, quadruple dipping by now) was also in the top 10, Jurassic World: Ultimate Collection was 5th.

The Black Phone was in third place.

The rest of the new titles in the top 10 were all 4K-only releases, Child’s Play: Collector’s Edition in 7th, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade in 10th, and Red Dawn: Collector's Edition in 11th.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Other than the 4K only releases, only "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" had a 4K edition. 8 titles out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions.

On 4K, "Jurassic 6-Movie Collection" managed a 4K sales share of 22.04%, just ahead of "Jurassic World Dominion" with 19.82%.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the best-selling overall title and new release for the week ending August 13, 2022. It easily outsold everything else for the week, and even the obligatory Blu-ray only Sonic 2-Movie Collection sold well enough to land a 5th place finish.

The 4K release of Heat was in third place.

Men was in 8th place, while another 4K release, this time for Event Horizon, was 10th.

There was only one new release outside of the top 10, and that was Last Seen Alive in 11th.

These new releases helped Blu-ray revenue and market share to recover slightly ... but only slightly.

Weekly Blu-ray market share fell below 40%, the first time since May, and Blu-ray revenue was almost at record lows - there was only one new release in the top 20!

That single release was the 4K release of Tenebrae, all the way down in 17th.

And that was it for the very, very quiet week.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: Tenebrae was a 4K-only release. Every single title out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

As "Tenebrae" was a 4K only release, it did not qualify for ranking in either the Blu-ray or the 4K sales share chart (as it nominally had a 100% ranking for both charts).

Interestingly, " Everything Everywhere All at Once" topped both the Blu-ray and 4K charts with the impressive results of 78.23% and 31.90% respectively.

Blu-ray revenue fell from last week despite the release of an A-list title in the form of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The fact that this movie dropped on Disney+ way back in June probably had something to do with its lacklustre performance on Blu-ray.

It was still easily the week's top seller, selling almost three times as many copies as the second-placed, and also new, The Lost City.

Green Lantern: Beware My Power, in third place, was also new.

The only other new release was the 4K release of Species in 16th place.

This week's Ultra HD Blu-ray report: All of this week's four new releases in the top 10 had 4K editions or were 4K only releases. Every single title out of this week's top 10 had UHD editions!

The new "Doctor Strange" movie did well on 4K, with a UHD sales share of 36.45%. "Green Lantern: Beware My Power" did well too, with 22.12%. Again, "The Lost City" was the one trailing everyone else, with only 8.79%.

The Amazon Prime Day sales were on during this week, which explains the nice bump in Blu-ray sales, despite the lack of any compelling new releases. Weekly Blu-ray market share was also above 50% for the first time since April.

And that was it in terms of new releases in the top 20.

"Raging Bull" wasn't made available on DVD, so it did not have a BD sales share (or rather, it was at 100%). "The Beatles: Get Back" did have both Blu-ray and DVD editions, and 65.91% of all sales for this title were on Blu-ray.

On 4K, 87.44% of sales for the Criterion Collection edition of "Raging Bull" were for the 4K version. So Criterion's decision to start making 4K discs was the right one, it seems.
