I believe that if most of the movie fans could actually see the difference between std def movie played on an upscale player run thru HDMI connection to a HDTV output at 1080p
compaired to
Blu-ray disk played on a Blu-ray player run thru HDMI connection to a HDTV ouput at 1080p
that there is very, very little visual difference, its all in audio difference and the time it would take for Blu-ray to catch up to the std def popularity would increase.
But, hi def is here to stay on what format will be is determined by cost.

Yeah Fast Eddie you're right... I'm what's known as a "quality whore" (I stay away from premade AVIs because they look nowhere near as good as the source, regardless of what everyone else says), and I can't see the difference for at least 50% of movies between upscaling and an actual Blu-Ray disc.
I really hope Sony loses because of their stuck up "we're better than everyone" attitude... see what I said in the other thread about MiniDisc.CYA Later:

This is going to be a helluva ride in the mean time. I'm just learning now the lingo and different formats/techniques used to view hdtv/blu-ray. I must admit that yesterday I walked into BB to see what came out and they had a sp3 hooked up to a hdtv from sony at 1080p and the picture was immaculate like nothing I've seen b4. Take note though I haven't seen any format like that including the upconvert Fast Eddie mentioned. Though my common sense, if it's common, tells me that there's probably not too much of a difference.
@admin. Right now the way this is all heading what would you consider to be a good suggestion regarding hdtv and any new format in the future? In other words, seeing that digital's coming no matter what do you suggest getting a hdtv and just go w/the flow until a bridge comes that we'd have to cross? Thnx.SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

Well even digital distribution and the like will require a HDTV (since the distributed content is most likely HD, once they work out how to deliver so much content without blowing up the entire Internet), so that's a no brainer.
The PS3 is actually an interesting device, because it does play Blu-ray, but it also plays video files on your computer including HD H.264 streams (up to 1080p) and SD DivX/XviD files. It could be seen as the perfect device to add digital distribution to, as it's basically a media hub that's also a Blu-ray player and lastly, a game console (other people's priorities when it comes to the PS3 may be different). The PS3 even has a web browser, so Internet based video apps (like YouTube) can be viewed as well. The same with the Xbox 360 (and NetFlix video streaming will be available on it soon), except it's a bit too noisy for the home theatre and it doesn't have a web browser.
Blu-ray is not as attractive now though mainly because of the price, but if you're used to paying $15 to $25 for DVDs, then switching to Blu-ray should be easy. But if you're used to buying DVDs for under $10, then Blu-ray will be a huge price increase. In terms of picture quality and the like, it's the best out there. You can tell the difference between upscaling and true HD, but the question is still would you be willing to pay almost double for the pleasure (the average Joe would say no, the HT enthusiast will probably say yes).Comment

Thnx admin. This clarifies a lot concerning purchasing, format and specs. The main thing is the HDTV and there's plenty here on that and also on our friend Google. Oh well, change is constant so I guess my analog sony wega trinitron will have to go eventually. Reason I didn't go HDTV was that at the time of purchase they were still having issues w/both lcd's and plasma. It's going to serve me better anyway to go HDTV. Space is scarce here in Manhattan. Those tubes are space hogs. Lol...SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,
