Hollywood: Court rules against China DVD player maker

The Motion Picture Association of America Inc. (MPAA) said Friday (Oct. 31) that a California court issued a permanent injunction that prohibits China-based DVD player manufacturer Gowell Electronics Ltd. from violating any term of the Content Scramble System (CSS) license agreement.

    A bit more background:

The lawsuits assert that Gowell and Wanlida manufacture and sell DVD players that lack appropriate security features used to prohibit the unlawful reproduction and distribution of motion pictures in breach of the Content Scramble System (CSS) license. The studios are seeking injunctions requiring full compliance with the CSS license agreement and a recall of all products in violation of the CSS license.

Actually what happened is that Gowell made a DVD player that allowed copied CSS discs to be played. That is, if you went into Windows Explorer, copied all the encrypted DVD files from the DVD to your computer and burned a disc out of that. Normal DVD players won't play this "scrambled" DVD, but the one Gowell made does.
