Oppo To Release Lower Priced Blu-ray Player In January 2010

According to an official Twitter post, Oppo will release a new lower priced Blu-ray player in January 2010. Their current player, the BDP-83, is one of the most feature rich players around, at least when it comes to playback formats. Supporting SACD as well as DVD-Audio, the BDP-83 also features industry leading upscaling performance and all the usual Blu-ray features such as BD-Live. But at the $499 price point, it is now considered one of the more expensive players, although still cheap compared to players with similar feature sets.

No other details are available on the new model, suffice to say that it will cost around $299 and perhaps with support for SACD and DVD-Audio removed to save on production costs.

Sorry, $299 is the rumoured price for the new model, $499 is the current price for the BDP-83.

There are a couple of importers here in Australia, and they sell modded players, but I'd have to pay about twice the US retail price to get one (around $US 1000).

for around $500 many people here would buy a 83

oppo first announced a distribution network in some european countries but stepped back in the end and the import versions are way too expensive

There's great demand for Oppos here as well. Oppo needs to get their act together and go global.

Details about the new Oppo BDP-80 is now available. The new player is priced at $289. The cost cutting has been made with the removal of the ABT2010 video processor, removal of a dedicated stereo output, and less remote functions.

i'm not sure that video quality, especially dvd upscaling, will still be top notch when oppo drops the anchor bay chip

an oppo 80 will hardly be any better than the rest of the pack

A full test will tell us for sure, but I suspect that may be the case.
