A new PC TV tuner card from AVerMedia, the AverTV CaptureHD, can actually record from HDMI sources. Very few devices on the market exist that can record from HDMI, as content owners specifically designed HDMI, and more precisely the HDCP copy protection system, to prevent recordings due to fears of piracy.
But AVerMedia's new card can record from HDMI, although it is unknown whether it will process HDCP encrypted streams. Some of the previous HDMI recording capable cards and devices did it by converting the HDMI input into analogue, and then back to digital again, so it was not a true 1:1 recording.
