One of the interesting developments last year was the Nvidia ION platform, which was just another way of adding a more powerful graphics processor to existing netbook and nettop systems.
While 3D gaming was still somewhat unrealistic on a ION equipped system, HD playback was not, thanks to GPU assisted decoding. This then opened up the opportunity to have Blu-ray playback possible, and thus making nettops an ideal home theater component (low power requirements + low noise = excellent media hub).
And Asus may be preparing to roll out a new Eee Box with a built-in Blu-ray drive, according to a Swiss shopping website.
Even on normal PCs, Blu-ray drives have not yet reached the point where they are standard equipment, even though most PCs are more than capable of playing Blu-ray movies. And this may explain why PC manufacturers have been so slow to take advantage of ION to produce Blu-ray capable nettops.
