Blu-ray Specifications Now Allow For 100, 128 GB Discs

A new addition to the Blu-ray specifications could see disc capacity increased to 100 GB and 128 GB.

Dubbed the BDXL standard, it will introduce 100 GB re-writable discs and 128 GB write once discs, allowing even more data to be stored on a single optical disc.

However, BDXL is not backwards compatible with existing Blu-ray hardware, meaning users will have to buy a new Blu-ray drive in order to read from and write to BDXL discs. And as such, BDXL is only expected at this moment to be primarily a PC based addition, as the lack of backwards compatibility will limit its use in the home video arena.

Another addition is the introduction of IH-BD, which is basically a dual layer Blu-ray disc where one layer is read only and another layer is writable, allowing discs that can allow new data to be written, but keep important data read only. IH-BD will also require new hardware.

All the Blank Blu-ray discs as of now are pretty much garbage as far as I've read. Data seems to disappear after a short while. This here area of Blu-ray is far from mainstream. Best bet is just the flics bought or encoding to a Hi-Def format to burn on a DVD, or play from a HDD.
