Judge Nancy Gertner has cut PhD student Joel Tenenbaum's liable damages from $675,000 a tenth of the figure, $67,500, but still says that "this reduced award is still severe, even harsh".
A jury previously awarded the music industry $675,000, or $22,500 per shared song, in the second highest profile case the music industry was part of. The earlier case saw an award of nearly $2m awarded to the music industry against single mother Jammie Thomas, which was later reduced to $54,000.
The judge also described the harm that Tenenbaum caused as "minor", saying the new award more than fairly compensates the plaintiff, the RIAA.
The RIAA did not agree and has stated they will contest the ruling.
