The Xbox One has won its mini-duel with the PS4 for the month of December, as results show it was the best selling non-portable console in the U.S. for the month.
The December month is the most important for video game sales, a record month for sales usually thanks to shoppers looking for the latest and greatest holiday gift. This December was no different apart from the fact that it would be the first holiday period for both Microsoft and Sony's new consoles.
Having won November's duel, largely thanks to it having being released a week earlier than the Xbox One, Sony's PS4 was a comfortable second behind Microsoft's console for December.
Worldwide, the PS4 is comfortably outselling the more expensive Xbox One, although the PS4 is available in more markets than the Xbox One at this time.
Data released by Microsoft shows 908,000 Xbox One consoles were sold in December in the U.S., on par with the number of consoles sold during the previous month. While Sony did not provide any numbers officially, leaked numbers point to 860,000 units sold for the PS4.
The next best selling non-portable console was Microsoft's Xbox 360, selling 643,000 units. PS3 sales stagnated during the holidays, with only 299,000 units sold.
In between these two last-gen consoles was Nintendo's own entry into the next-gen, the Wii U. Wii U sales have been disappointing so far, but December was the best month ever for the Wii U, with around 480,000 units sold.
