Apple Signs Writers Guild Master Contract, Paving Way For More Original Content

Apple has signed the current Writers Guild of America's (WGA) master contract, and has agreed to abide by these terms even for content that it intends to distribute for free, announced the WGA.

The move is seen as both a significant step for Apple as it ramps up production of original content for its range of products and platforms, as well as being a significant step for the WGA in their bid to lock down terms for the emerging "free-to-consumer" market space.

Facebook has already launched content on its "free-to-consumer" service, the WGA noted, and so agreements are needed in order to protect the interests of writers.

WGA affiliated writers creating content for Apple will now be in a position to negotiate better deals, thanks to the new agreement.

Apple are already said to be in development of a show based on the best selling novel Shantaram, and has already produced shows like 'Planet of the Apps' and 'Carpool Karaoke: The Series'.
