    CES: Roku Launching 8K TVs in 2019 with TCL, Streaming Hours Up 68%

    With 4K TVs still fighting for dominance in the marketplace, Chinese electronics giant TCL already has eyes on releasing a 8K television in 2019, to be co-branded with long term partners, Roku.

    8K TVs promise up to 8,000 lines of horizontal resolution, with more than 33 million pixels used to display every single frame, up from the 8.3 million pixels in today's 4K UHD televisions. While 8K content is still thin on the ground, TV manufacturers like TCL are betting on more content being made available once more 8K displays are in people's homes.

    One way users will be able to get 8K content in the future may be via Roku app platform, with the streaming distribution platform reporting excellent figures for 2018. Active accounts on Roku exceeded 27 million, up 40% from 2017, while streaming hours topped 7.3 billion hours, up 68% year-on-year.

    China's TCL has also grown leaps and bounds in the crucial North American market, with the company now claiming the crown of the second most popular brand of smart TVs. TCL's SVP Chris Larson expressed his excitement in launching a range of 8K TVs in 2019.

    "We are thrilled to continue to break boundaries as we plan to build televisions that push the limits of picture quality and offer TV models with built-in voice control," said Larson.

    The excitement was shared by the GM or Roku TV & Players, Chas Smith.

    "In designing and delivering 8K TCL Roku TVs we will reach new heights by offering beautiful picture quality combined with America’s No. 1 TV streaming platform," said Smith.
