Hulu Posts Huge Rise in Subscription Numbers

Hulu has posted a 47% year-on-year increase in subscribers numbers, bringing the total number of subscribers up to 25 million.

Much of Hulu's recent success has come down to the critical success of its original offerings, especially 'The Handmaid's Tale', which won 2 Golden Globes for its first season. The Dystopian drama's second season was also a hit with viewers, with a massive 76% gain in total consumption compared to the already successful first season.

Hulu's other major original show for 2018 was 'Castle Rock', an anthology series based on characters and settings from storytelling maestro Stephen King's stories.

Launched in 2016, Hulu's Live TV service also experienced substantial growth in 2018, with Hulu revealing that subscribers of Hulu with Live TV spend roughly half of the time watching on-demand content, the other half on live programming.

Hulu's financial results also painted a rosy picture, with advertising revenue growing by 45% to $1.5 billion.

Hulu's CEO Randy Freer was delighted by the results.

"Consumers have spoken loudly about their desire for more choice and control in their TV experience. They are seeing the enormous benefits of streaming, they’re deciding which content and brands are most important to them, and they’re choosing Hulu," said Freer.
