Adding Special FX To A DivX File...

G'Day,

I've joined this forum to ask for some help because I've run out of ideas for what I want to do.

I want to take the movies I rip and add Special FX to them. They are usually ripped from DVD to .vob and then audio is typically compressed to mp3 stereo or full AC3 5.1 and video is compressed using the DivX codec.

All I'm trying to do is add a 3 second screen at the beginning of the movie with an animated screen with something like: 'Ripped By GalaxyRanger'.

I've managed to make that actual screen and it works fine in Sonic Foundry Video Factory 2.0. I then try to join the screen onto the front of my rip in VirtualDub but it always comes up with an error message. Even when the specs for the 2 files are exactly the same it'll throw an error message at me.

Adobe Premiere 6.0 won't even let me open my DivX movie clips. Gives an error message about not having the right decompressor.

Can someone help? Is there an editor out there which deals specifically with DivX movies only? Why can't I just join my 3 second screen onto the front of my movie? I don't want to reprocess the entire movie again in these editors, I just want to add the 3 second screen to the beginning of the file and save a direct stream copy not a processed one that'll be several GB's in size!

Any help would be much appreciated. This is just starting to piss me off now!!

actually, I have done this myself:

I used cool 3d or something (by ULEAD)

I then did animation to it and adding text and then exported it as AVI.

then I took this avi and basically encoded it to DIVX using the same codec as the movie (as u know, I prefer 3.11a)

i then took this animation and the movie and joined them together using virtualdub.

I did try that using Sonic Factory to make my animation then compressing as you say with DivX 5.0.2 & trying to join with VirtualDub but VD wouldn't let me. Oh well, maybe a little fiddling. More advice please!!

what is ur video file? is it DIVX 5.0.2? same bitrate as the file u are trying to join?

Yeah, I tried to keep everything the same. However, when I manage to get the bitrate the same then VirtualDub complained about frame rate which I put right. It is now giving me the following error message:

Cannot append segment: The segment has a different number of streams.

Any ideas how to alter the number of streams? I'm not even entirely sure what streams are...

well DIVX v4 and 5 sux (for me )

are u sure EVERYTHING was the exact same? like the bit rate, the res, the bit (video format), even the audio? Even tho there may not be any audio in the animated logo, put in the audio track and don't record anything to it, just leave it with audio in...then try to append it.

Ahh right, then the audio must be where I'm going wrong. VirtualDub is compalining about different the 'sample rates' of the 2 clips. Does this refer to audio?

The other thing is I'm not sure how to keep the audio the same as the movie has a direct stream copy of the sound of the DVD, i.e. AC3 5.1. How on earth could I add AC3 sound with no sound on it to my special fx intro?

ur best making the audio as MP3 (the whole thing, the movie) as it will also reduce file size..

Yeah but since I have a 5.1 speaker setup I like to rip 5.1 soundtracks in their full digital glory. Much nicer viewing experience, I find.

A 2.1 soundtrack I would do in normal mp3 stereo as you suggest.

OK, so if that's going to be difficult, what's the easiest way to add special fx to a movie? Do it before you compress using DivX? When it's still in .vob format?
