USB vs FireWire

I'm new to this forum and I would like some digital-digest-home-experts say me differences between USB and FireWire.

I've already check each cable speed:
USB 1.1 : 12 Mbps
FireWire 400 : 400 Mbps
USB 2.0 : 480 Mbps
FireWire 800 : 800 Mbps

Do you know if one of this cable will throw the other away or do they have specific features that could determine they can both stay in a same box?

Regarding to the use of an external hard drive, what would you advise?

i'd say usb 2.0 if u have a pc, firewire if u have a mac...
