It's sad to see a computer go to the claws of windows... BSD and some other unices are the only OSes capable of HyperThreading. Windows doesn't come near on the benchmark graphs, and the ... code ...

What I would do is run FreeBSD, then use wine to run the video programs that don't work. for the other programs that don't work, I would use VMware and windows. Just my thoughts

I wonder, if you were on limited money, why didnt you go for a socket A system?

You could literally get the BEST amd xp out there, the 64bit 3.2GhZ one i believe, and still have money left over compared to the P4.

      But still, very kick-ass setup

Hmmm do you have like an amazing buffer on that beast because when drives reach the over 200GB plateau they go at the 1$/GB price range...and is that in Canadian or American money?

It's a Maxtor USB II/Firewire external. Average Seek Time: 10 ms; 5400 rpm; 2 MB buffer. American $$.

I have always gone with Intel systems in the past due to AMD overheating issues, and the XP 3.2 GHz (about $80 cheaper) is slower than the the Pentium 4 3.06 GHz (533 MHz version). If I wanted to go for an AMD, I would have gone for the 64 bit version, with the 3.2 GHz being around the same price.

My original budget was around $4200, but the salesman talked me into getting another hard drive for RAID (extra $100) and a 9800 XT instead of a 9800 Pro (another extra $100). So that's why I had to cut back on the RAM, and reduce the size of the hard drives. I am planning to build another computer myself (as in buying parts and assembling it myself), which will be a computer for work only, so I can probably replace the RAM with something better and use the old RAM in the work computer.

Don't have the time and patience

All the parts were picked by me from their pricelist, and I would have saved only $50 (their assembley charge) if I opted to build it myself. If I knew a good parts wholesaler (or buy some parts online), than I guess I could have saved a lot. But then again, you get a discount if you buy all the parts from the same store, so ...

But now that I've got a new computer (plus my old one is still good enough for some of the work), I can search around for cheap parts and start building the work computer I talked about in my last post.
