it most definitely is

right now i have these at home:

- glendronach 15 yrs, 100% sherry matured

an excellent speyside with a warm and intense raisin & sherry body, vanilla notes and slight turf/smoke finish


- glenrothes 1982

another speyside with a smoky nose, buttery/vanilla/sherry palate and a warm and spicy finish


- coal ila 15 yrs

finally an islay malt with a comparably light body
heavy turf/smoke nose, salty/spicy body with a hint of tar and an oily and warm finish

Gee this thread is changing shape - and it's not even dessert!

First we have the main course (the Americans, for some strange reason call it an entree), then some wine, then beer, then hooch.

We are going in reverse order, foodies!

Time to get back "on topic". Let's all raise a glass of fine Chateau d'Yquem (whose history dates to the 16th century, believe it or not)! Maybe coupled with a nice platter of cheese and say a lovely creme brulee?

but let's not forget chilenean cabernet-sauvignons

some of them can easily bear the comparison to bordeaux crus

My dear friend UncasMS - Although I haven't tried many Chilean wines, I would suspect that is a bit of an exaggeration!

(We can have a discussion like this - it is dessert, after all and we've imbibed quite a bit, n'est pas? )

Could you please provide some links for me to read by pompous reviewers (I won't mention Parker by name, errr.... oops!!) comparing such wines, s'il vous plait?

i'm sorry i actually can't provide you with a link because it was my personal impression not some parker/johnson writing about their taste


let's take the following examples

bordeaux cru - chateau rochemorin 2000 (~€15/28aud)
vs
montes alpha cabernet 2002 (~14€)

i prefer montes


Château Prieuré-Lichine (margaux) 1997 (€29/55aud)
vs
de martino gran familia 1997 (€28)

the martino is the better choice for me (even though i very much like margaux crus) - opened one bottle around xmas when tasting some wine with friends

Let us take some Chateau Haut Brion. Or Le Pin. Or, peut etre, du Grand Vin de Chateau La Tour!

And, I wish those continential prices were so easily translated here at simply the foreign exchange rate! We have the obvious freight and insurance charges, negotiants on 2 continents plus something we have here called the Wine Equalisation Tax (add 41.5% to the cost so far) AND THEN the retail markup (or the auctioneer's costs)!

A bottle of, say, 1990 Rominee St Vivant, one of the "mid range" DRCs, works out into 4 figures here. And the mighty Richebourg, La Tache and La Rominee Conti are multiples in terms of cost. Of course, 1990 is an outstanding year and somewhat cheaper prices abound for younger vinatges (and lesser wines).

What we do miss, in the main here, are the very very good wines that are not Grand Cru or First Growth. There are many many very good third growths/Premier Crus (or even Village wine!) that never hit our shores.

I shall keep an eye out for some Chilean wines and give them a try, however.
