IE Back button - increase number of steps

This is probably a cinch for jmet - but anyone pls feel free to make suggestions.

One of the things I do a lot in IE6 is to use the back button. But, on many occasions, I like to go back heaps at a time.

IE, by default limits this to 9 pages back, after which you can do it again and again etc.

Anyone know any registry hack or even a little app to increase the number to say 50?

I run maximised most of the time but will have multiple Explorers open, sometimes copying and pasting addresses between them.

It's a pain isn't it? Just when all you want to do is go back say 20 screens. There must be an easier way - a registry hack or something. I know you can open the history bar and order them "by order visited today" but that gulps screen space too.

I can't say that I use that back button very much. I have it set to open a new window every time I click on a link - then just press 'Alt' + 'F4' to close it down.

Don't know if any other web browser will allow more than 9 back steps.

That limitation doesn't seem to apply to Mozilla Firefox. I highly recommend you try out this wonderful browser and determine for yourself if it's time to switch over.

Ys, I'm sure you're right Enchanter. What I am doing, at a cost of a bit of screen space, is opening the history bar and viewing by order visited today. The cursor stays on the page I want until I change it. It's pretty useful, except that it won't open a new IE, even if you press shift.

Blutach...try this.

File>New Window. This will open an exact duplicate of the page your on, on top of where you started. Now go to any site...CNN is a good one and you can quickly go to new page after new page. I was able to go out some 12 pages and began to back page. I stopped counting at 22. Obviously, I went back farther than when I opened the new page...out 12..back 22, but it worked. I did use CNN and don't know if IE considers this a single page but I quickly visited story after story..which to me would seem to be another page forward. Hope this helps.

BTW, not sure what your saying in your last post...are you talking about history or back paging.

It was probably 17 out and 5 back from where I started..doubt I could have gotten back more than the original 9. MS in the help page on back page specifically mentions 9 so that is probably the normal limitation.

I use firefox occassionally, and it is great. From what I've read it's more secure than IE. My problem is that I've found a few things that weren't compatible. The Google bar is one that I recall. Also, I seem to remember having problems with my online banking account. Several things but can't recall..but enough to force me back to IE to avoid the hassles.
