These are mainly for wired networks, but it should apply to wireless networks as well:

    * Make sure Windows file and printer sharing is enabled for your network connections (if you went through the wizard, this should be done for you, but just check anyway). Go to My Network Place, right click on a blank area and select properties. This should list all your network/dial up connections - the one for your network is usually "Local Area Connection" or "Wireless Network Connection" - right click on that and select properties - check and see if "File and Printer sharing ..." service is listed, if not, press "Install" -> "Service" and add it in.

    * With my firewall (ZoneAlarm), I had to manually create an entry (under "add network" or something similar) for each computer that is allowed to connect to my computer (that is, to add their IP address or the network IP range to the allow list). If you see the computer listed in My Networks, but you can't access it, it's usually a firewall problem on the other end, I find.

    * Also make sure all the computers are in the same workgroup as each other. To check or change the workgroup, right click on "My Computers", go to the "Computer Name" tab and make sure the "Computer name" is different on all computers and "Workgroup" is the same (change them if necessary). Note the computer name - you can connect to computers without going through My Network Place by Start -> Run -> and typing "\\computername" (without the quotes). For example, if your computer was name "mediaserver", then you can type "\\mediaserver" to access it. I find that this is faster and more reliable than going through My Network Places.

If you can access the net through all 3 computers, then it suggest they are connecting to each other (or rather, connecting to the router) properly. Connecting a Windows XP to a non Windows XP (Me or 2000) computer is a little trickier, but it usually means just creating a new user account to connect to.

Thanks admin. Your second paragraph helped a lot.

      I got it working !!!!

I am very happy at the moment.

      See pic.

It was a combination of selecting gateway as the internet access in the network wizard. I then added the IP addresses of all the computers into the trusted zones of Zonealarm.

The strange thing is disabling both firewalls previously didn't work.

I now have a firewall problem.

I ahd Zonealarm deactivated on the main pc. If I enable it, I lose the network. I have entered the computers into the trusted zone. I have to deactivate zonealarm on the pc to get the network back.

Zonealarm on the laptop works ok.

I have now got rid of zonealarm and got Kiero instead.

I have tried Keiro and the network is working again. It came up with laptop trying to access the PC. I just needed to press permit and it confgured itself.

              Thanks.

The wireless works brilliantly. I played a DVD off the hard disk inside my main computer wirelessly on the laptop.

However, the laptop has started to lose the audio every few restarts. The driver is still there but it isn't working. I have to uninstall and then get it to reinstall automatically. It is a Realtek AC97 audio chip.

The connection is 54Mbps. The router is connected by ethernet at 100Mbps. 't There is a double speed option at 108Mbps.

I am using it for mainly for wireless Net access between three computers which is juts 1Mbps.

I am having fun with this wireless business.

I have a computer upstairs and one downstairs both on the wireless. I also have a new laptop on wireless as well.

I can press print from upstairs and the printer downstairs starts printing.

I created a DVD ISO on the computer upstairs and used the laptop to read the ISO in a program called NTI CD & DVD Maker (came with the laptop). The program then burns a DVD in the burner in the laptop.

I have also used Shrink on the laptop to read a ISO off drive D in the computer upstairs. It deep analysed the ISO and created reauthoured files onto drive C of the computer upstairs. It was slower as it is going through the wireless. The laptop is downstairs

Has anyone else got into wireless yet.

I've used VideoLAN to stream a movie file from one computer to my notebook (using wireless of course) with good effect. I even tried it with my video capture/TV tuner card, and while the results weren't the best, it was watchable. Now I can watch TV anywhere around the house on my notebook

HDTV requires 25 Mbps or better I think, and while theoretically 108.11g wireless should be enough at 54 Mbps, in reality, it's more like 20 to 30 Mbps. Blu-ray/HD DVD will be 36 Mbps, so you can rule out streaming these discs over a wireless network (copy protection permitting). 108.11n should be good though, if/when it gets released, although Pre-N is good enough for now.

I never have worked out how to use VideoLan. I use PowerDVD to open the ripped DVD files and VUPlayer to play streamed MP3's.

                            only in a perfect world

i believe its more like 12mbit-14mbit in aus, and that is the max any state in aus gets, for any channel (ch9)

in other countries though its gets up to 20mbit i think...

Yes, the Enhanced Definition TV that's in Australia (7 "HD") and the other "let's use as little bit-rate as possible, no one can tell" channels.

For VideoLan, try it on a MPEG file first and open in (on the "server" machine) using the wizard (you need to enter the IP address/range of the computer to stream to, or use the HTTP option). Then on the client machine, start VideoLan and choose File -> Open Network Stream (or Ctrl-N), select the UDP or HTTP options, then and press OK. It should start playing.

Thanks but, I think it will be eaiser to stick with wireless through PowerDVD. I have a 200GB of DVD's on a hard disk (will be adding a 300GB one soon). I can play them off the hard disk on my main computer and onto my laptop.
