My computers messed up.......Again

when i installed a new version of zone alarm i picked clean install now i have all sorts of wierd stuff.like having six profiles....




and when i double click on my hardrive it brings up a search box instead of opening......


what the hells happened???!!

I just upgraded to the free ZoneAlarm 6.0.667.000. I did a clean install, rebooted as directed, and everything is fine

uninstall zonealarm again, make sure you delete the 'zone labs' folder in 'c:\program files'. then reinstall...

you may also want to check for viruses/spyware/adware. i don't like the sound of that search box...

I did that update also. The problem is that I never remember which buttons I press.

Wasn't there a question if you wanted to install it for all users or just one? I could be mixing it up with another program.

When you did that installation - was you logged in as administrator in Windows XP?

I use Zonealarm but haven't upgraded to the current version. I read a couple of posts that it has messed up several people computers. I am happy with the current version and may just wait for the next one to come out.

I'm running XP Pro Sp2 with all the latest updates from M$ and was logged in with administrator rights and did not have a problem with the latest update for the free version of ZoneAlarm. I chose the clean install as it was recommended, rebooted and everything is fine.

That is why I use Norton Ghost. I can restore 7GB of files in just 3 minutes.

I use Ghost also. It is an imaging program that backs up a partition or HDD and everything that is on it. No need for program cd's, files or serial numbers. It's best to have your OS and programs on a seperate partition.

I have a drive C and a drive D. I backup on a 7 to 10 day basis. It involves creating a image of the whole hard disk and storing the image on drive D. I can then restore the image at any point if something goes wrong.

It is also possible to backup to a CD/DVD as well.

i recommend you back up all your files to cd/dvd/partition and just do a clean format, it will ensure a nice clean working PC, unless ofcourse its a hardware problem...

I would back up all your important files and do a fresh install. Make partitons and use an imaging program like ghost to do an image of the fresh install. Using ghost allows the same thing in a whole lot less time. I have an image of a fresh install of the OS along with the programs I use. I format the cdrive and restore the image to it, giiving the same result as a clean install because it it one. All my data, mail, etc. are stored on other partitions. I also ghost them to DVD.
