That's all we need. People are upset enough when they burn a whole lotta 25c CMC coasters. How do you think they'll be when their "el cheapo" $2.00 DL CMCs go belly up?
Almost any use of DL media is a fad, "look I did it, cause my burner will do it,
doesn't matter how much the media costs, or how long it takes, or that it makes no sense whatsoever".
Now when the technology matures and media prices drop and reliable burns at 8x,
but by then all those same people will be playing with newer technology.
The only good I see out of ritek and cmc ramping up DL production in Taiwan is maybe it will help to bring down the price of quality DL media, for those occasions when you want a 1:1 copy of a superbit or 3hr+ movie.
I only use DL media because I want no compression on eveything and keep DTS audio. I use it on my projector while making sure my orginal is safe. It is a lot cheaper than buying a second copy if something happens to the original.

Couldn't you use 2 disks(4.5g) and accomplish the same thing?
Or make 2 sets, one with ac5 the other with DTS?
Of course paying 4-5$ a disk helps manufactures recover their
R&D cost quicker and hastens the lowering of prices for us
cheapskates, VBG!
But will it be OK in a year's time? I am just not at all sure about their dyes.
If you have an old CMC burn from a year or so ago, it would be interesting to see a test.
PS Glad to see we're on topic again!
Regards
Well so far all I have found is 1 yr old Pro and Ricohjpn disks,
the ricoh started out fine(94) but the last few hundred megs dropped
quality to 48%(4350burn), of course that where all the use abuse was.
Pro disk started lower(90) but I aborted after 1 gig.
This was the web site I used to look for which movies came out when.
Maybe true ole decrypter, but it may interest peeps that Digital FAQ has risen CMC in the rankings from 4th class "pathetic landfill material" to bottom of 3rd class "questionable quality".

I agree +R's have the advantage of setting the booktype to DVD-ROM for compatability.
Also note the last time the Digital Fag media page was updated was 4 1/2 months ago on 5-13-05. And no I don't have shares in CMC, just have had luck to date with the ones I have. And like blutach said, how good will they be in a year. This goes for all DVD consumer media, we have to wait and see how long they last. I have 15-20 year old VCR tapes that still play good.
i reckon the same thing will happen to dvd's as has happened to cd's now. its hard to find a crappy brand of CD-R's nowadays, the burners/media have been pretty much perfected.
if it were up to me, i would have all vcr tapes thrown out of my home. i can't get over the fact that the quality deteriorates a little with each play. like i've got to choose carefully when to watch stuff
