i'll second to use partition magic, but i have to add one aspect to the above statement:

you can only split off that part/amount from the hdd that is EMPTY; splitting a 160gb drive to 2 x 80gb when 100gb is used will not work

True, not a first. Ya would hafta move data etc. then play around with resize and move with adjacent free space.

I'm very sorry to hear that my friend. But practice makes perfect. So, buy another drive and try again. The bigger drives split easier, so go for a 400Gb or a Tb even.
