i thought i should post this in the other thread since this is drf's thread, but since he has shown an interest in the camera,

here's the original photo, taken by the "auto" settings, in which the camera automatically selects the best capture settings. not so great:

that has ofcourse been cropped & resized. the max res you'll get out of it is 2848x2136. each pic is saved as jpeg, each 3mb in size

either you spend a few minutes trying out each setting as to get a 'decent' image, or you get something like the pic above. but that image can be easily fixed in ps in couple of min:

more than half of the pics i have taken (using auto or custom settings) could do with some retouching. but don't go by me! you might be better at taking photos than i am

here a picture frm my camera..... picture taken under normal room light with no flash in both pictures. Also pics are croped and compressed for smaller sizes, without any touching.

first picture is with Auto option which opted to use ISO 200, look at the noise

Second pic is in full manual control with ISO set to 50

taken in very good daylight, ~2pm.

use photoshop (curves) to define blackest of blacks & whitest of whites in the image, then specify a 50% gray adjust threshold to find this. (make sure 'shadow' RGB values are set at 12,12,12, and 'highlight' RGB to 245,245,245 beforehand). adjust brightness, contrast, saturation as you see fit. add slight lens blur to background & unsharp mask to foreground if needed. use healing brush/clone stamp with low opacity to remove blemishes (careful not to remove too much, eventually it will look like a pic of a different person!)

if you want more detail, probably better to start a new thread

that orange glow is because im not using flash and light inthe room is kinda yellow not white.

but then i dont like auto modes anyway and i hardly uses it, even in bright lights.

Wow, I don't want a camera that the auto mode sucks in. I will go out to the camera store and see what cameras are good.

Hmmm... well if they have that camera at a local store, I will try it out and see for myself. Otherwise, I will probably stick to the one I have - it looks good.

The auto mode on my new camera is pretty good. It defaults to fine quality so, I use Program Auto mode instead and set quality to standard. Everything else is set to auto.

There is a interesting flash option to raise or lower the power of the flash. Sometimes, the flash can be overpowering with some cameras. My Olympus camera was like that.

I am really pleased with the Sony (even if I have to start using Memory Stick cards). It is really easy to change settings.
