How Clueless Were You Before Coming To The Forums?

I wonder how many people feel that this forums made a significant change to their digital lives. I also wonder if anyone also came to the forums dumb as I was...I had no smallest clue how to back up my dvds sometimes i'd just bugger hundreds of empty dvds with nero

Since I came to the forums I learnt to backup, i learnt to extract audio from my dvds and play live sound in my car whilst i drive and more!!!

I didnt even think I could post screen shots...I thought it was some thing way beyond, like an alien magic.

Who else feels that they were at Grade 0 level when they started coming to the forums? I wanna hear your worst stories

I also want to hear from the expert guys and how they developed their skills and all....can you loosen up and talk?

DVF has definantly made a big change in my digital life! I now know what "quality" media is! Like anything in the pc world, this is a long, slow hobby to master, but once you study, learn by trial & error, & listen to the top notch guys on here, the road definantly gets less bumpy!

I am pretty much completely self-taught in pc building/repair, (as a hobby/pastime/family tech) but have lots more to learn, even after working on them for 8+ yrs. Problem is, things are always changing at an incredible rate in the digital world; once you learn one thing, all the rules change!

As Night stated, read, read, read!

I thought 50 packs of "Value Disc DVD+R" at CompUsa for 5 bucks were the greatest

And I believed that Memorex was the best from my tape days in my car!

Remember: "Is it live or is it Memorex?"

I am now "trying" to copy those 200 Memorex DVDs.

A lot are unplayable and are worthless. So much time and effort is now wasted because I thought that way. A very expensive time lesson to save a couple of pennies (per disk).

"It it live or is it Memorex?"
It is Memorex and it is ****!

It's made a big difference for me.I came to these forums not knowing a darn thing about burning and I knew very very little about PC's.Thanks to the mods and other members I went from novice to some what advanced.I went from paying someone else to add parts for me to being able to reformat my drive and do a clean install if I need to. I am also able to add a new HD if I need to and I recently just added a new PSU.I know darn well I couldn't have done this two years ago when I joined. So a big thanks to every one here who helped me

I was using Dvd Decrypter, Dvd Shrink & burning automatically with Nero from Dvd Shrink. The first hint of this new protection was bewitched but I didn't know anything about it. Computer knowledge at that time, absolutely zero. When we bought our first computer just a year & 5 months ago, we weren't even going to get internet. Now I can't say what I know about computers which is still not a whole lot is all from here because I have asked questions & talked to others about that side. As far as digital goes though, it all started when I stumbled in to this Forum & the people who helped me don't even know how much I appreciate it to this day. Somebody always has to bring up quality media just because before I came here I went out & bought a 200 box of Dynex & if that wasn't bad enough went out & bought another 200 box a few days later. This story is all about that. This Forum rocks big time.

I knew absolutely nothing about digital video or burning. I had just bought a new computer with a dvd burner, and a friend told me about this site. I knew discs were encrypted, but had no idea how to get around it. I too, went for the bargain basement DVD+Rs! Imations! Not even fit for coasters!

Yeah, this forum rocks. My case is worse I mean who of you has at one time opened files in a dvd and thought that if they copied and pasted to another empty dvd it would just play ha ha ha

now I ca do very sophisticated things with my cellphone and laptop.....my technological life is just much more advanced

BR this is inspiring, how did you go about learning to reformat a drive and add parts to your PC .....gosh I cant even install a TV card......dealing with the motherboard and reformatting is an area that needs huge improvement for me. Any tips?

I was backing up DVDs way before DVD Shrink came out. Back then, IfoEdit was king! I actually started doing DVD backups at Doom9 forums. There were so much gray areas and very little/no/vague guides to show what to actually do. Probably because the steep learning curved methods with limited softwares were time-consuming to document. Being determined and pro-active, I finally learned about how to do what "advanced" users were doing. It also helps to study up on the DVD structure and terminologies.

Rather than keep my notes to myself, which I went to extremes to research/ test/document, I decided to post my guides on forums. This was my way to giving back to the community.

Nowadays, I find myself doing less backups and more on assisting people.

Basically all did was ask a bunch of questions or I read what others posted on this subject. The General Computing forum here is great for these types of questions.I give a lot of credit to Chewy he has helped me a lot in this area.I also give credit to the other members there two cents are very helpful as well Once you dive in and actually do it it's then you fully understand what others were telling you. I made it out to be a lot harder then it was.And by doing all this tinkering I am thinking about building my own PC soon
