anyone have or know about TDK 420N recording issues?

I installed a tdk indidvd 420N a few days ago and it seems to have made my system a little unstable. has this happened to anyone else? perhaps i was some other change that i can't remember making...

anyway, i ripped some home dvd's with dvd shrink which worked very well and then i burned them onto blanks using nero 6 by choosing "dvd video". the burning goes ok and it plays well off my computer. however, when i try to play it on my stand alone machine (toshiba) i get a "disc error". at first i thought it happened because i only ripped and burned the movie without extras and menus, but when i burned an entire movie it still didn't work.

i know my toshiba dvd player can handle dvd+r 4x recorded dvd's since it was able to play that kind of recorded disc that i friend provided from his burner. he has dvd+r provided by dell, which i think is made my NEC.

do different manufacturers burn discs differently even with the same format?

any light on this topic would be quite appreciated. thanks.

When in NERO's "DVD-Video" mode, did you (as you MUST) place ALL of the DVD-related files (.IFOs, .BUPs, and .VOBs) into the RED "VIDEO_TS" folder?

"it plays well off my computer."

I presume you mean that the hard drive version plays on your computer.

Does the burned DVD play on your computer?

There's always the possibility that you are using either inferior quality media and/or your standalone DVD player doesn't "like" the brand of media that you're using...

hey setarip, thanks for your replies. the burned dvd's play well on two different dvd drives that i have. i use pretty decent quality media...tdk and memorex. a tdk disc was burned by my friend and successfully played on my stand alone.

it's quite a mystery and i might have to return this drive.

I assume Nero also created a folder named AUDIO_TS.
Did you finalize the DVD or kept it open?

Ask your friend which program he used to burn his movie, and try
that. And yes, the brand of burner, as well as the brand of the
media, and the standalone players are all factors.

And before you return the device, consider trying a different brand of media. Just because your friend's TDK played on your standalone does not mean that the TDK your burner produced will be compatible. Try Verbatim or Memorex or Sony's.

                To solara

                (A small point)

"I assume Nero also created a folder named AUDIO_TS."

The poster, "subtler" stated that he used NERO's "DVD-Video" - which automatically includes the standard empty "AUDIO_TS" folder...

thanks, everyone for your input. i've found that it's a compatibility problem with my stand alone toshiba and the tdk burner. if i play my burned disks on a sony stand alone, it works beautifully.
