Cutting a 1.4Gb .avi in half, VBR question

I have 'backed-up' a DVD using this guide http://www.doom9.org/gknot-main2.htm All has been going well except when I made my first 2 cd rip, I select "1x vbr-mp3" as instructed and the rip goes fine, and I end up with an .avi file of 1.4Gb, that plays fine from the HDD. How do I now split this file in half to get it burnt onto 2 cd's?
I have used Virtual dub a good few times, but now it tells me about having a skew problem due to the VBR, and should re-encode all audio with a CBR, If I do re-encode to CBR then wont the file size be larger than 2x700mb? (I thought VBR saved Mb's of room)
I have cut it without re-encoding and the skew is awful. Am I missing an 'auto-cut' setting in Gordian Knot somewhere?....If not then how do I cut my lovely rip onto 2 cd's with VBR?

With vbr mp3 audio streams you need to use nandub for splitting.

VBR audio streams are a nightmare to work with - I wish they weren't used in official "group" releases.

If you don't want av sync hassles, compress with a fixed bitrate audio stream.

Some people appear to have problems with vbr audio. I have never seen the slightest problem in any of my rips.
