Problems seeking in compressed file

When I compress a short file (about 30 min) I don't have any problems playing it.

But when I compress something that is about an hour long, it plays back fine all the way through. But if I try seek to a spot that is any more than about half way through the video, it will seek to the same exact point in the file which is about half way through the video.

I recorded an 88 minute video using VirtualDub (15fps NTSC at 320x240) and whenever I try to seek to anything in the second half of the file it jumps to 42:33 minutes.

Does anyone know why this happens and how I can fix this?

Are you encoding using '2-pass second pass' ?

If you want to use 2-pass encoding you must do both the first pass and the second pass.

What do you mean by I have to use both first pass and second pass encoding? I have to compress the file twice?

Yes two pass encoding involves two passes. A first pass using 'Two Pass First pass' which creates a log file and an invalid avi file. And a second pass using 'Two pass Second pass' which creates the real avi file.
