Handycam to Divx

Does anyone know what software can I use to compress avi to a divx quality file format? I have capture to avi from Handycam but it was too big (like 10GB) so which software or method can I use to compress file size with less deducted quality?

That is a fairly broad question.

Do you want to play your files on a dvd player? If so consider svcd/vcd/cvd/dvd formats

If you want the best compression and do not want to play the files on a standalone dvd player go for divx/xvid. In this case I would recommend virtualdub (www.virtualdub.org)

Read some guides at doom9.org and divx/digital digest.
