    misreporting file length

I'm compressing video files, and although the source file seems ok, the converted file:

    1) still isn't small enough. It went from 445,959 mb to 252,850 mb. When I check my converted file with avicodec, it says the video is 227 mb, and the audio is 19 mb. What configuration settings can I change to make the video size smaller?

    2) Windows Media Player says the track length is 8:59:24, and won't let me skip along in the track. When I try, it stops the file. The file is actually only about 43 minutes. Why is it misreporting, and how can I fix it?
