Under XMPEG, use Uncompressed PCM (.WAV) audio (to lock in synchronization) - then convert to .MP3 under VirtualDub...

        1) Load .AVI into VirtualDub
        2) Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copying"
        3) Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
        4) Under "Audio", click on "Conversion", select "44,100Hz" (or 48,000Hz, if this doesn't present a playback problem for you)
        5) Under "Audio", click on "Compression" select "MP3", "44,100Hz" (or 48,000Hz), "96Kbps" (or higher)
        6) Save revised .AVI with new filename
