if the two avis have the same compression method in video and
audio.... that means same codec, same audiocodec same resolution, same bitrates you could use virtual dub to do so.....
just run virtual dub open your first avi with the file dropdown menue.
-->open video file.
--> hit "append avi segment" in same menue and choose your second avi.
--> in video and audio dropdown menue choose "direct stream copy"
-->in filedropdown menue choose save as avi and enter a NEW
filename......e voila....
if the avis are of different "structure" give ulead a try or better
pinnacle studio 7 or higher (the last one is my favorite for almost any kind of movie editing)
