Can't get audio in sync with video

I'm using virtual dub. Here's the deal, I'm capturing the video in mpeg1 with the digital vcr on the ATI MMC. Then I'm compressing it to an .avi file using divx low motion at 1000 bit rate and audio at 56 kbits/sec on mpeg layer 3. When the file is done compressing I open it up and the audio is playing too early by around a second. Anyway to fix this? I've tried changing some settings in the audio interleaving, but to no avail. If anyone has any insight, let me know!

    Thanks in advance.

    1) What audio format are you using to capture? You should use Uncompressed (PCM) 48,000.

    2) If the audio is consistently playing a second or so early throughout the entire video, you certainly should be able to use VDub's "Audio skew correction" to fix it. As a first attempt, set the correction to 1,000 - then alter as is necessary, based on the results.
