cut off the black borders around the video could anyone help me on how to do this please

Open in VirtualDUB, apply "null transform" filter, click on "cropping" ...

I'd say that cropping is just a part of what you need to do in this. You still probably need to apply other filters, especially if the source is the pesky interlaced NTSC, and then fiddle with the codec settings. But hey, that's the fun part, isn't it?
